DESCRIPTION:Nate Hendley is a Toronto-based journalist and true-crime author. His most recent book\, The Beatle Bandit\, won the Crime Writers of Canada Award of Excellence for Non-Fiction 2022. Nate has also written books about gangsters\, cons and hoaxes\, and bandit duo Bonnie and Clyde. For more information about Nate’s books and background\, visit his website at www.natehendley.com. \nThe Beatle Bandit: A Serial Bank Robber’s Deadly Heist\, A Cross-Country Manhunt\, and the Insanity Plea that Shook the Nation \nMatthew Kerry Smith was a troubled navy veteran who robbed Toronto-area banks in the early 1960s to finance a one-man revolution. On July 24\, 1964\, disguised in a Halloween mask and a “Beatle” wig\, Smith held up a bank at Bathurst Manor Plaza in North York\, Ontario. Smith killed a patron who tried to intervene\, then escaped. Dubbed “The Beatle Bandit” by the media\, Smith’s actions fueled a nationwide debate about gun control\, insanity pleas\, and the death penalty. \nThe book\, The Beatle Bandit\, written by Nate Hendley and published in November 2021 by Dundurn Press\, details Smith’s life. \nThis is an in-person program. DESCRIPTION: John Grenville\, former Curator and Historical Research Officer at Fort Henry and long-time investigator of Kingston’s military architecture\, will report on his research into the city’s iconic Market Battery. \n\nWe return to in-person meetings in January\, now at the Kingsbridge Retirement Community which has graciously agreed to let us use their very comfortable theatre lounge for our meetings. This is a most attractive location with comfortable armchairs and the most up-to-date audio-visual equipment. The spaciousness of this venue also allows us to offer light refreshments and an opportunity for socialization after each lecture. \nThe Kingsbridge Retirement Community\, 950 Centennial Drive is the tall building just south of Princess Street. Ask for the theatre lounge on the lower floor. Enter by the prominent door on the east side. Someone will be at the door to give you directions and to check your double vaccination status. There is free visitor parking along the north side of the building. Express buses #501 and 502 serve upper Princess Street to very near Kingsbridge. Bus #4 offers slower service along Princess Street from downtown. Use the Centennial Drive bus stop. \nCovid precautions: Please wear a mask on entry to the building\, but you may remove your mask once in the room. Proof of vaccination is mandatory. The building is kept meticulously sanitized.

SUMMARY:Toronto Railway Museum (Virtual): Streetcars and the Shifting Geographies of Toronto
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Streetcars and the Shifting Geographies of Toronto”\, an online lecture on April 20! \nWhat can photos taken by streetcar enthusiasts reveal about the changing nature of cities? This is the question explored by Brian and Michael Doucet in their book Streetcars and the Shifting Geographies of Toronto: a visual analysis of change. The Doucets carefully and meticulously rephotograph these images taken in the 1960s and 70s to bring them into dialogue with contemporary planning\, policy\, political and public debates. \nStreetcar enthusiasts did not intend to document the major forces of change shaping cities\, but their images show far more than just the vehicles. In pursuit of their hobby\, these enthusiasts photographed cities in ways that very few other people did\, and took pictures in parts of the city that would have otherwise gone unphotographed. \nWhen paired with photos taken at the same locations today\, these images show the subtle and not-so-subtle economic\, social\, demographic and spatial changes that have taken place as Toronto has transitioned from an industrial and provincial city\, to one of the world’s major global metropolises. They show how these forces of change are reflected in the buildings\, streets and land uses across the city. \nThere are many books\, studies and reports that try to understand long-term changes in cities such as Toronto. Streetcars is one of the few that uses visual images as the primary way to analyse change. The Doucets aim to challenge everyone – scholars\, students\, planners\, politicians and the wider public – to look at their cities in new and different ways. \nJoin us for this engaging and insightful discussion about how photography can be used to better understand cities and urban change.

The Lafferty family arrived in Canada in the 1830s as penniless and illiterate freedom seekers from the United States. You’ll learn how Alfred excelled and became the first Canadian-born Black lawyer in Ontario.\n\nApril 27: Black History in Ontario\, 1793–1965\nAnd in the final session on April 27\, Winston Anderson will present an overview of events in Ontario\, beginning with the Act to Limit Slavery passed in 1793 and taking us forward to 1965. DESCRIPTION:Food historian Neil Buttery delves into the life & food of Elizabeth Raffald: cookbook author\, tavern keeper\, mother\, midwife & exorcist! \nThe great Elizabeth Raffald used to be a household name\, and her list of accomplishments would make even the highest of achievers feel suddenly impotent. After becoming housekeeper at Arley Hall in Cheshire at age 25\, she married and moved to Manchester\, transforming the Manchester food scene and business community\, writing the first A to Z directory and creating the first domestic servants’ registry office—the first temping agency if you will. Not only that\, she set up a cookery school and ran a high-class tavern attracting both gentry and nobility. She reputedly gave birth to 16 daughters\, wrote a book on midwifery and was an effective exorcist of evil spirits. \nBut all this pales in comparison to her biggest achievement: her cookery book The Experienced English Housekeeper. Published in 1769\, it ran to over 20 editions and brought her fame and fortune… until her alcoholic husband bankrupted the family\, twice. \nHer book\, however\, lived on. Influential and often imitated (but never bettered)\, it became the must-have volume for any kitchen\, and it helped form our notion of traditional British food as we think of it today. \nTo tell the story of Elizabeth’s tumultuous rise and fall—and how her influential book helped form our notion of traditional British food —historian Neil Buttery doesn’t just delve into the history of food in the 18th century; he has to look at trade and empire\, domestic service\, the agricultural revolution\, women’s rights\, and much\, much more. \nA question & answer period will follow the talk.

You’ll learn how Alfred excelled and became the first Canadian-born Black lawyer in Ontario.\n\nApril 27: Black History in Ontario\, 1793–1965\nAnd in the final session on April 27\, Winston Anderson will present an overview of events in Ontario\, beginning with the Act to Limit Slavery passed in 1793 and taking us forward to 1965. He will explore the lives of people of Black heritage\, both free and enslaved\, who shaped Toronto.\n\nEach session will consist of a presentation and an opportunity to ask questions. Be a part of the first audience to test this experimental game! \nIn order to join this unique test group\, you’ll need a smartphone\, a set of headphones\, and a keen curiosity to explore the early stages of this unconventional new game. \nOn this Nuville tour\, you’ll test a live-action-role-playing game directed through your phone. You’ll role-play with fellow attendees as Nuville citizens who are on a mission to hack the city’s “algorithm.” You’ll be directed to complete a series of tasks that challenge the flow of urban life by rebuilding your relationship to place\, presence and humanness. \nStep into the world of Nuville. \nIn the world of Nuville\, you live in a future where the planet’s population has found refuge from the climate crisis in a megacity built by artificial intelligence. Built on robotic intelligence\, productivity is the name of the game – but at what cost to humanity? \nWhile Nuville appears to be the high-tech city of our dreams\, humans have become disconnected from city-building\, history\, the environment\, and each other. Wanting to reconnect\, you join a collective of citizens-turned-hackers\, called “Hacker D-Central\,” who want to hack the system and make Nuville more human.

In a guided walk through Black Creek Community Farm’s forest\, you’ll experience traditional Indigenous maple baskets and settler-style aluminum maple buckets which have been Indigenized through visual art and audio soundscapes. \nThrough sound\, song and sweetwater\, this experience invites you to make meaningful change as a treaty person yourself.
