DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday April 11\, 2024 at 1pm for the next Phoenix Seniors Club event at the Heritage Hall\, 83 Essex Street\, Guelph.  The Heritage Hall has been recently renovated and is fully accessible.  Refreshments will be provided and transportation is available.  This event is presented in collaboration with The Buttahfly Initiative. \nThis month our guest speaker will be Sya Van Geest\, storyteller\, local volunteer and activist. \nSya is a member of the Guelph Guild of Storytellers and an avid veteran storyteller comfortable telling to all ages.  She’s a regular volunteer in schools\, children’s groups\, seniors homes\, church groups and special events and a teacher in the craft of storytelling.  She is an experienced educator with over 30 years as a classroom teacher\, teacher librarian\, consultant and author of curricula and short stories in both elementary and high schools. \nSya was a recipient of Ontario Library Association Distinguished Service Award in 2004\, the Guelph Women of Distinction for Voluntary Community in 2010\, and the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow in 2021.  Sya is a founding member of ‘Guelph GoGo Grandmothers’ which is part of a global grandmother movement supporting the ‘African Grandmothers Campaign’ of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.\nFor more information or to register: \nPhone: (519) 837-2519 or email: info@guelphblackheritage.ca

DESCRIPTION:Coming April 8th is a total eclipse! If you are as excited as we are come out and celebrate with us by making craft rovers! Napanee is lucky enough to be on the path of totality for the solar eclipse\, meaning the moon will completely block out the sun; this won’t happen in our area again until 2079. To celebrate the moon (the “star” of any solar eclipse) we’re making our own toy Lunar Roving Vehicle to go with the 3 leftover from the Apollo 15\, 16\, & 17 missions that are still on the moon today. Have fun decorating your rover and creating a pipe cleaner astronaut to go rolling along on earth as if it were on the moon. \nNo pre-registration required\, however\, capacity and supplied are limited.

Bown as he discusses his latest book Dominion: The Railway and the Rise of Canada\, which tells the gripping and eye-opening account of the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and how it enabled the nation of Canada. \nWith over 3\,000 kilometers of track\, much of it driven through wildly inhospitable terrain\, the CPR would be the longest railway in the world and the most difficult to build. Its construction was the defining event of its era and a catalyst for powerful global forces. \nIn recent years Canadian history has been given a rude awakening from the comforts of its myths. In Dominion\, Stephen Bown again widens our view of the past to include the adventures and hardships of explorers and surveyors\, the resistance of Indigenous peoples\, and the terrific and horrific work of many thousands of labourers.
