SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Free Public Lecture (In Person and Virtual): Lakehead University Graduate Students - Christine Green and Haileigh Riddell
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from Lakehead University Graduate Students Christine Green and Haileigh Riddell. This will be a in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in-person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date. \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WEBINAR\n  \nChristine Green\, Constructing a Collective Past: Locating Indigenous Histories in Local Narratives \nTruth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #67 calls for the federal government to undertake a national review of museum policies and best practices to determine compliance with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and make recommendations. Of specific importance is UNDRIP Article 15.1\, outlining Indigenous peoples’ right to have their cultures\, traditions\, and histories appropriately represented in education and public information. \nOne of the main ways the public interacts with Canadian history is through museums and public history initiatives. So\, the question becomes what representations of Indigenous histories are being presented in museums? This presentation will examine exhibition and programming practices in museums located in Northwestern Ontario in order to analyze the collective imagining of community histories in relation to Indigenous peoples. By examining exhibits\, programming\,  and outreach materials at various museums across Northwestern Ontario a pattern of representation emerges where Indigenous histories are relegated to the fur trade era and earlier. This presentation will examine why this pattern exists\, what museums are doing to correct it\, and what museums need in order to support the major changes required. \nHaileigh Riddell\, Eugenics: A comparison of Ontario and Alberta while examining the connection to Northwestern Ontario \nHer presentation compares the Eugenics Society of Canada\, based in Ontario\, and the Alberta Eugenics Board\, while examining the connection to Northwestern Ontario. In comparing the two provincial eugenic organizations\, the talk explores the similarities and differences in key policies\, legislation\, and public sentiment\, while discussing the lasting impact of eugenic practices in Canada. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. Refreshments will be available.

SUMMARY:UEL Association of Canada - Governor Simcoe Branch (In-Person and Virtual): March 2023 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“Murder & Mayhem\, Settlers & Sinners\, Colonists & Criminals: More Thrilling Stories from New France” — Presentation by Carol Ufford and Dawn Kelly \nWednesday\, March 1\, at 7:30pm – on Zoom; Register here \nThe meeting will take place in the downstairs meeting room at St. David’s Church\, 49 Donlands.\nIf you plan to attend in person\, RSVP to Anne Neuman at anneneuman@hotmail.com or 905-888-1278. \nCarol Ufford and Dawn Kelly return with more fascinating stories from New France — unusual deaths\, illegitimate children\, and of course a little witchcraft and murder. As they tell the stories\, Carol and Dawn will show some of the resources they used to trace their family histories. \nDawn Kelly is a veteran radio newscaster. In 1998\, after 13-years moving town-to-town\, up-and-down the dial in private radio\, she signed on as a national newscaster at The Canadian Press. Dawn has won multiple national awards for her broadcasts as well as a Finalist Award from the New York Festival for Outstanding Achievement. She started searching for her Irish ancestors many years ago only to discover she has deep French-Canadian and Acadian roots. \nCarol Ufford is a retired librarian and has been researching her family history off and on for over 30 years. Since retiring in 2016\, she has been able to devote more time to her hobby and has made great progress on her family history story. Her family has deep roots in Ontario\, but she is jealous of her husband’s deep French-Canadian roots on his father’s side\, which include 35 Filles à Marier and 34 Filles du Roi. Carol is currently Chair of the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society. \nIn 2021 Carol and Dawn won the Members’ Choice Award from the Toronto Branch of Ontario Ancestors for their presentations on New France.

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society (Virtual): Robert Home Smith\, Riverside Drive\, and the Humber Valley Developments
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that our speaker for March and April will be Richard Jordan. We thoroughly enjoyed Richard’s presentation to the Swansea Historical Society in November 2019 on the subject of Hurricane Hazel\, and we are delighted that he has consented to return (virtually) to join us in Swansea in the coming months. \nRichard Jordan is a former President of the Etobicoke Historical Society. \nA seasoned writer and an exciting and entertaining speaker\, for seven years Richard contributed a local history column to the Toronto Star. His feature articles on various topics have appeared in the Saturday Star\, the Sunday Star\, and international history and genealogy magazines. He has made hundreds of presentations on local history in various venues\, and now that he is retired\, his repertoire also includes his experiences travelling the world. \nThe topic of Richard’s March 1 presentation will be Robert Home Smith\, Riverside Drive\, and the Humber Valley Developments. Robert Home Smith was a fascinating and mutli-faceted Toronto character in the early 1900s\, a lawyer by training\, a civic leader\, an international investor\, and a property developer who was also a natural-born town planner with a vision and an eye for architecture. Among his many contributions to Toronto’s history were the development of a series of elegant west-end neighbourhoods including The Kingsway\, Baby Point\, Humber Valley Village\, and Swansea’s Riverside Drive area. \nIn April\, Richard will share his knowledge of the history of Etobicoke’s three lakeshore communities\, Mimico\, New Toronto\, and Long Branch. The three former municipalities share many things\, including the streetcars of Lake Shore Boulevard West and the beautiful shores of Lake Ontario\, but they have very different histories. Mimico is an older town\, once the home of palatial estates. New Toronto had its start as a gritty industrial suburb. And Long Branch began as a gated\, upper-class cottage community and resort in Victorian times. No doubt\, in each case you will see many parallels with the history of Swansea. Richard invites us to come take a pleasant journey with him along the lake and hear stories about the people and neighborhoods of Etobicoke’s Historic Lakeshore. \nHERE ARE THE LINKS FOR THE MARCH 1 VIRTUAL MEETING ON ZOOM.\nThe link will be open shortly after 7:30 pm and we are suggesting that people sign in before 8 pm so that we can get the meeting started promptly at 8. \nMarch 1\, 2023 – 8 p.m. start\, however accessible at 7:30: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89694421653?pwd=bTJWUUsvY0NlMjZWL1FNd0ZIVmRuQT09 \nMeeting ID: 896 9442 1653\nPasscode: 363568

SUMMARY:West Toronto Junction Historical Society (Virtual): Adam Bunch\, "The Toronto Circus Riot: A True Tale of Sex\, Violence\, Corruption and Clowns"
DESCRIPTION:The strangest riot in Toronto history broke out in the summer of 1855\, sparked by a brawl at a King Street brothel. When some rowdy clowns picked a fight with a battle-hardened crew of firefighters\, they would quickly learn they’d made a terrible mistake. The circus performers found themselves facing off against Toronto’s powerful Orange Order in a bloody clash that revealed the fault lines that once violently divided our city. \nAdam Bunch is an award-winning storyteller who brings the history of Toronto and Canada to life. He’s the author of The Toronto Book of the Dead and The Toronto Book of Love\, the host of the Canadiana documentary series\, and the creator of the Toronto Dreams Project. \nADVANCED REGISTRATION REQUIRED! REGISTER AT:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpfu6przotG9ErjgvQ_AuRjDIA7mCRXLhq\nZoom then will send you Login details

Celebrate in the heart of Old Town Toronto\, where the city was born. \nToronto’s First Post Office and the Town of York Historical Society invites you to take part in our annual commemoration of the day Toronto became a city: March 6\, 1834. \nAfter two-years of meeting virtually\, we are celebrating in a big way\, in person\, and returning to our previous venue at the historic St. Lawrence Hall. We’re so excited to present our very special guests: broadcaster and Indigenous advocate Jesse Wente\, with Native Earth Preforming Arts. \nOf course\, it wouldn’t be March 6th without the popular Old Town Silent Auction\, featuring many of our favourite local businesses! In addition\, we will be offering a cash bar and small plates featuring food from the vendors of St. Lawrence Market. Doors will open at 6:30pm. \nFollow us on Instagram\, Facebook\, and Twitter @TOs1stPO\, and this event #TOs189th to find out more about our performers\, food and drink sponsors\, silent auction donors and lots\, and event sponsors. \nDon’t delay! Tickets are strictly limited. You must be an existing Town of York Historical Society member for member pricing. If you would like to join or need to renew\, simply choose the membership and ticket option. \nWe appreciate the support of many community partners in this fundraiser\, including our members\, neighbours\, and friends who purchase tickets to our annual celebration. Proceeds from this event benefit the Town of York Historical Society and Toronto’s First Post Office\, a museum and National Historic Site. The Town of York Historical Society researches\, interprets\, and promotes the history of the Town of York and early Toronto\, and fosters the preservation of the Town of York’s surviving built environment.

SUMMARY:Kingston Historical Society March 2023 Meeting (In-Person and Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Military historian Dr. Matthew Barrett will discuss his ground-breaking use of graphic art – cartooning – to convey historical narrative and analysis. Barrett’s pictorial chronicle of events such as the battle for Hill 70 in World War I have been widely featured in the national press. \n\nWe return to in-person meetings in January\, now at the Kingsbridge Retirement Community which has graciously agreed to let us use their very comfortable theatre lounge for our meetings. This is a most attractive location with comfortable armchairs and the most up-to-date audio-visual equipment. The spaciousness of this venue also allows us to offer light refreshments and an opportunity for socialization after each lecture. \nThe Kingsbridge Retirement Community\, 950 Centennial Drive is the tall building just south of Princess Street. Ask for the theatre lounge on the lower floor. Enter by the prominent door on the east side. Someone will be at the door to give you directions and to check your double vaccination status. There is free visitor parking along the north side of the building. Express buses #501 and 502 serve upper Princess Street to very near Kingsbridge. Bus #4 offers slower service along Princess Street from downtown. Use the Centennial Drive bus stop. \nCovid precautions: Please wear a mask on entry to the building\, but you may remove your mask once in the room. Proof of vaccination is mandatory. The building is kept meticulously sanitized.

SUMMARY:Museum of Lennox and Addington: Using Genealogy and DNA to Trace our Refugee Roots
DESCRIPTION:If you dig a bit into most family trees you will find ancestors from across the country and around the world.  Why did they move around? Was it their choice or were they forced to move away?  Chances are that some were forced out and made refugees. What different tools can a genealogist use to locate these ancestors and their stories? How do you find those ancestors if your grandparents had to leave with only the clothes on their backs and never wanted to talk about where they came from or what happened? What can we do to trace the family tree with the one thing that every refugee took with them? \nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:\nJim Sova is a volunteer with the Archives at the Museum of Lennox and Addington. He has a passion for helping others solve family tree mysteries and unlocking the potential of DNA testing. \n— For ages 13+\n— $3/person\n— No pre-registration required

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Free Public Lecture (In Person and Virtual): Nancy Angus - Places and Faces: The Stories behind the Stories of Place During a Pandemic and Today
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from Nancy Angus\, founder of Age BIG and co-coordinator of the Places and Faces project. This will be an in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date. \nClick here to view the webinar \nDESCRIPTION: \nJoin Nancy Angus\, founder of Age BIG and co-coordinator of the PLACES & FACES project as we share its stories. Learn more about the concept of placemaking and hear how our storytellers\, all 65 years or better\, captured their stories digitally (in videos composed of photos and voice-overs)\, as audio recordings and as written accounts. \nPLACES & FACES asked storytellers to recognize a place or places that fostered a sense of connection and belonging to their community\, outside of their home. With senior centres and other facilities closed during the pandemic\, we heard many stories about how older adults engaged in placemaking to overcome barriers to social connection. This project demonstrated how resilient and creative people can be in making those connections. \nPlacemaking is often concerned with planning\, designing\, and managing public spaces in ways “that promote people’s health\, happiness\, and well-being.” Emerging research is now focusing on placemaking as a way that people “transform physical spaces into socially relevant and meaningful places.” PLACES & FACES has gathered some of the stories that highlight how older adults in Thunder Bay are actively creating and negotiating their sense of place as they age. \nJoin Nancy and our storytellers as we celebrate their stories and learn from their experiences. Through stories such as these\, we hope to inspire others\, young and old alike\, to find or create their own places. In doing so\, they can help others who are physically isolated or feeling lonely to find connections that matter as well. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. Refreshments will be available.

SUMMARY:Guelph Historical Society Evenings with History: "John Galt\, the Local Indigenous\, and the Founding of Guelph"
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Gil Stelter\, Professor Emeritus\, University of Guelph\, Department of History \nThis illustrated talk is an exploration of the largely unknown relationship between John Galt and the Six Nation’s leader\, John Brant\, in the events leading up to Guelph’s founding\, and then the actual construction and building of the new town. Brant was the son of the noted Iroquoian (Haudenosaunee) leader Joseph Brant\, who had led the people of his Confederacy to the so-called Haldimand Tract along the Grand River after the American Revolution. Galt had long been sympathetic to the Six Nations claims that they were allies\, not subjects\, of the British crown. Galt demonstrated that it was possible for colonizers to work together with the local Indigenous communities in the building of new towns like Guelph and Goderich. \nGHS Annual General Meeting will be held on April 4\, 2023\, at 7:00 p.m. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Ontario Heritage Conference 2023 (London)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome from the Local Organizing Committee for London\, Ontario \n\n\n\n\nWe are so pleased to welcome you all to London\, Ontario for the 2023 Ontario Heritage Conference. There will be so much to talk about this year\, as new opportunities and challenges lie ahead that will require us to think in new ways about how we preserve. There is no better way to face it all than by learning about\, and from\, each other. \nOur heritage communities are slowly rebuilding after years of drifting between virtual and in-person meetings. We have learned valuable lessons during this time about how to connect when it becomes difficult\, and how to keep up with the work of protecting our heritage resources in shifting sands. \nThis conference will consider many perspectives on this work. Many of us are working hard to draw attention to voices that have not always been heard in our heritage discussions. We will look critically at the work that we have done in the past\, while moving toward that which we will do in the future\, with creative new approaches. We have worked hard this past year to design a program that will challenge and excite you. There is much to celebrate even as we brace for the hard work ahead. \nThroughout this conference\, you will have a chance to learn\, to wander\, to discuss and to consider these next steps. London is a city rich in heritage resources with many successes and many challenges\, just like the place that you are from. We have spectacular heritage buildings throughout our City\, as well as a rich mosaic of beautifully preserved Heritage Conservation Districts\, a vibrant and vast network of museums\, and a multitude of organizations working together to keep London on track as a distinct city that sees it’s roots clearly and holds on to the lessons of the past. \nHeritage protection is good urbanism\, and at this conference we will showcase examples of how our historic areas house living\, vibrant and changing communities. We will take you to stunning adaptive reuse examples that will inspire you and lead you to consider how we can fold in all voices into this important work of understanding our past – no matter how challenging – and embracing our shared future. \nThank you for joining us in beautiful London\, Ontario – there is a lot to see here\, and we can’t wait to share it with you. \nYour Local Organizing Committee: Mike Bloxam; Dhira Ghosh (London Heritage Council); Dr. Jason Gilliland (Western University); Michael Greguol (Heritage Planner\, City of London); Dr. Michelle Hamilton (Western University); Tara Jenkins (Cultural Heritage Lead\, AECOM); Wes Kinghorn (ACO London Region Branch); Don Menard; Dorothy Palmer; Mike Rice (London Middlesex Historical Society); Maggie Whalley (ACO London Region Branch)
