SUMMARY:Heritage Rail Alliance Canadian Council 2021 Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Council of Heritage Rail Alliance offers this conference to Canadian HRA members and other Canadian railway heritage organizations by means of the Zoom video-conferencing platform. \nToday\, most Canadians\, especially younger generations\, have little direct experience with railways and only a limited understanding of their role in building and sustaining the Canadian economy. This includes not only the communities from which we draw our visitors\, volunteers\, and supporters but also the people who staff funding agencies and adjudicate grant applications. This lack of engagement with Canada’s railway history can have a direct impact on the long-term sustainability of our enterprises. \nWhat can we do to change this? How can we make railway heritage meaningful to more Canadians and build larger audiences and more reliable support networks? What do we need to do to ensure that our organizations will survive and thrive in the future? We don’t often have time to ponder these big questions\, focussed as we are on the demands of daily operation. Now is a good time to think about why we do what we do\, why it matters\, and how we can plan for a better and more stable future. \nPresentations: \nReading artifacts—telling the story: Sharon Babian and Jim Cullen will discuss the development of the compelling stories that can be told about the artifacts in our collections in a way that will generate interest in museum visitors who are not railfans. \nStrategic planning—case studies: Paul Newsome and Robbie Robinson will show how to construct a basic strategic plan to ensure consensus amongst stakeholders which will be useful in determining actions you can take to advance our institutions. \nAudience development—school groups: Ian Kerr-Wilson\, retired head of Hamilton Museum\, will discuss how to generate visits from school groups\, boosting attendance and revenues. \nA separate registration is required for each attendee. To register for this free conference sign up at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/heritage-rail-alliance-canadian-council-2021-virtual-conference-tickets-187854657337?aff=HRAmembership

SUMMARY:Museum of Lennox and Addington: Heroines of the Storm: Film Screening with Dale Morrisey
DESCRIPTION:On November 9th at 7pm\, join us at the Museum of Lennox & Addington for a live screening of episode four\, The War at Home\, from Dale Morrisey’s documentary series Heroines in the Storm. \nThe live screening will be followed by a talk and question period by filmmaker Dale Morrisey. \nEpisode four focuses on the war at home and how it impacted women as well as how women played a crucial role on the home front. During World War Two women faced new challenges but also exciting new opportunities as men marched off to war. Increasingly women were called on to fill roles left empty by men who joined the war effort. Women such as the Gibbard Girls helped as factories shifted to wartime production\, and so did the bomb girls who helped with munitions. Women helped farmers facing labour shortages to grow and then harvest food that helped feed civilians at home and soldiers abroad. On the baseball diamond women stepped up to plate in an experimental professional women’s baseball league. The film makes use of first person interviews\, historians\, along with archival images and footage – some of the images and footage have rarely been seen by the public. \nHeroines in the Storm is inspired by the book Extraordinary Women Extraordinary Times by Sherry Pringle. \nRegister here: https://museumoflanda.as.me/?appointmentType=27197669

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Virtual Lecture: OHT CEO Beth Hanna – The Path to a More Inclusive Narrative: Sharing Experiences
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be presented virtually with no in person component. \nCLICK HERE to watch the free webinar!\nIn recent years the Ontario Heritage Trust has designed programs and partnerships to create a more inclusive discussion of heritage\, to expand the historical narrative in Ontario using land protection and stewardship\, public programs and its social media platforms to explore new approaches to the work we do. Drawing from specific examples of programs and property protection\, and sharing lessons learned from collaborations with Indigenous nations and racialized communities\, Beth will discuss some thinking on new initiatives along with the joys and challenges of the Trust’s work to design protection practices and interpretation approaches that are more honest and inclusive. \nBeth Hanna is Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Heritage Trust. SUMMARY:Woodland Cultural Centre: Teióia’ks iakwateró:roks “We watch movies” Film Series – The Gift by Gary Farmer
