DESCRIPTION:This fall’s PHS monthly meetings and speaker series will remain virtual but will be conducted on Zoom in real time with a question-and-answer period following the speaker’s presentation. Attendees will be provided with the link to join meetings when they register by email as instructed below. \nSpeaker: Janet Higgins \nJim Higgins was an English orphan who migrated to Canada for farm work in Saskatchewan in 1928. The Depression of the 1930s triggered his activism in the causes of social equality and democracy. In the polarized climate of the time he joined 1700 other Canadian volunteers to fight fascism in the Spanish Civil War. In 1941 he settled in Peterborough\, married\, raised a family and continued working in the union movement to further workers’ rights. Janette Higgins is Jim’s eldest daughter\, a writer who grew up in Peterborough and edited her father’s memoirs\, providing a fascinating insight into a life both ordinary and extraordinary. \nTuesday\, 16 November 2021\, 7:30 p.m. on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Council of Heritage Rail Alliance offers this conference to Canadian HRA members and other Canadian railway heritage organizations by means of the Zoom video-conferencing platform. \nToday\, most Canadians\, especially younger generations\, have little direct experience with railways and only a limited understanding of their role in building and sustaining the Canadian economy. This includes not only the communities from which we draw our visitors\, volunteers\, and supporters but also the people who staff funding agencies and adjudicate grant applications. This lack of engagement with Canada’s railway history can have a direct impact on the long-term sustainability of our enterprises. \nWhat can we do to change this? How can we make railway heritage meaningful to more Canadians and build larger audiences and more reliable support networks? What do we need to do to ensure that our organizations will survive and thrive in the future? We don’t often have time to ponder these big questions\, focussed as we are on the demands of daily operation. Now is a good time to think about why we do what we do\, why it matters\, and how we can plan for a better and more stable future. \nPresentations: \nReading artifacts—telling the story: Sharon Babian and Jim Cullen will discuss the development of the compelling stories that can be told about the artifacts in our collections in a way that will generate interest in museum visitors who are not railfans. \nStrategic planning—case studies: Paul Newsome and Robbie Robinson will show how to construct a basic strategic plan to ensure consensus amongst stakeholders which will be useful in determining actions you can take to advance our institutions. \nAudience development—school groups: Ian Kerr-Wilson\, retired head of Hamilton Museum\, will discuss how to generate visits from school groups\, boosting attendance and revenues. \nA separate registration is required for each attendee. DESCRIPTION:Bolton and District Probus Club is pleased to invite you to our Probus Club meeting\, via Zoom\, on November 11th. \nWe recognize it’s Remembrance Day and we will have two minutes of silence at 11:00 am. This meeting will also be recorded so Club Members and guests may watch the presentation at a later date. Guests will need to provide me with their email addresses to receive the recording. \nOur featured speaker will be Nathan Hiller\, President of the Albion Bolton Historical Society. Nathan’s research on the history of Sandhill village is ongoing and was the catalyst for his upcoming presentation to us on Caledon’s Militia in the 1800s. \nNathan’s family moved into Albion Township over fifty years ago. He grew up in Caledon\, where he has worked\, played and developed two of his passions\, photography and history. \nNathan’s interest in photography started early\, viewing family photos some from the early 1900s. In 1996 he began selling his photographic cards under the name\, ‘The Caledon Collection’. The collection consists of local scenery\, wildlife and historic architecture\, just to name a few. \nNathan’s other interests include history\, from local to national to ancient civilizations. He has served two terms on Heritage Caledon\, an advisory board for the Town of Caledon. \n\nBelow is the link to join the Zoom meeting. DESCRIPTION:Fridays and Saturdays from October 15 to November 13\, and Sunday\, October 31.\n6:30 pm \nRegistration is required (link is external) and can be completed using the barcodes listed below. \nExperience a unique historical tour of the Settler’s Cemetery and the Billings Estate grounds at dusk. Hear true tales of death\, burial\, and disease from Bytown and Gloucester Township from a knowledgeable interpreter. This 1-hour guided exploration will take you beyond the walls of a typical visit to the museum and offer a glimpse of life and loss in 19th century Ottawa. \nPlease note: \n\nRecommended for ages 16+. The tour discusses difficult subject matter (e.g. disease\, violence\, death\, etc.) and visitor discretion is advised.\nThe tour is offered in English. French language tours can be arranged on request (with a minimum of 10 registered participants). Contact the museum for more information: 613-580-2088.\nPlease arrive 15 minutes before your tour’s scheduled start time.\nTours will take place rain or shine. Dress for weather conditions\, wear comfortable shoes\, and bring bug spray. The route will include uneven and grassy terrain as well as gravel pathways. DESCRIPTION:Save The Evidence Public Virtual Tour \nThe Woodland Cultural Centre presents a screening of the Mohawk Institute Residential School as a fundraiser for the Save the Evidence fundraising campaign. \nJoin us every third Wednesday of the month at 7pm and help us raise funds for this important project. \nThe virtual tour video was created with local production company Thru the Reddoor\, and it follows the guide\, Lorrie Gallant\, as she gives a tour of the former Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. During the video Lorrie provides the history of the institution over its 140 year history. Viewers will get to see the different rooms in the school\, from the girls’ and boys’ dormitories\, the cafeteria\, laundry room\, and other rooms throughout the building\, as well as hear interviews from five Survivors of the Mohawk Institute. \nEvent Information: \nTickets – $10 donation to Save the Evidence \nVirtual Tour Length – 45 Minutes \nQ&A Debrief – 15 Minutes

DESCRIPTION:Guest Speakers\nEmma Kent\, B.A. History\, Carleton University \nDetails\nBetween 1869 and 1932\, 100\,000 children were sent from Britain and placed with Canadian families\, often to serve as cheap farm or domestic labour. Ottawa’s St. George’s Home\, in Hintonburg\, was one of Canada’s principal “distribution centres” for Roman Catholic children. Emma Kent shares excerpts from her own grandfather’s memoirs to explore what kind of life these uprooted children faced. \nThis speaker series will take place via Zoom.
