SUMMARY:Campbell House Museum: Tales of the Grotesque
DESCRIPTION:Once upon a midnight dreary\, while I pondered\, weak and weary\, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—while I nodded\, nearly napping\, suddenly there came a tapping\, as of some one gently rapping\, rapping at my chamber door. “’Tis some visitor\,” I muttered\, “tapping at my chamber door—only this and nothing more …” \nAn immersive horror opera\, Tales of the Grotesque invites visitors to explore Victorian Toronto through the eyes of literature’s most twisted author\, Edgar Allan Poe\, and come tapping at the door to the unknown. \nIn this haunting adaptation of the works of Edgar Allan Poe\, join the visitors of the melancholy House of Usher on a candlelit journey into the macabre. Despite their apprehensions\, a stubborn doctor\, a resentful medium\, and a murderer attend the funeral of an eccentric recluse—only to question the circumstances surrounding her untimely death. As they begin to outstay their welcome\, they uncover evidence of a connection between their disturbing pasts and the sinister presence stalking their every move. With their secrets exposed\, they must be willing to summon their ghosts to survive the supernatural forces at work\, and confront the meddlesome housekeeper who knows more than she claims.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum - Bev Soloway - The Fur Trader's Table: A "Bill of Fare" from 18th Century Rupert's Land
DESCRIPTION:This will be an in-person event that is free to view.  The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in person and it will be recorded then posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date.   \nDescription: \n135 years before Fort William was built\, the Hudson’s Bay Company was sending fur traders to the meager posts dotting the Hudson and James Bays coastline. These men were predominantly from Scotland’s northern Orkney Islands. When the annual ship from Britain arrived in the north\, it brought imported food that was expected to last the year\, supplemented with local foodstuffs from around the posts. The Fur Traders’ Table takes a closer look at what imported and local foods were eaten\, as well as to what extent the men sustained old world foodways while experiencing new world resources.\n \nSpeaker Bio: \nBeverly Soloway\, from Lakehead University’s History Department\, has extensively investigated foodways during the HBC’s early years in the Sub-Arctic. Teaching Canadian history at Lakehead University\, her interests include exploring how Canadians live within their time and place\, including roles played by society\, gender\, and food.\n \n\nFree Museum Admission during the event\nRefreshments will be available\n\nThis lecture session is part of a the Society’s long tradition of holding free public lectures. Talks on a wide range of topics are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Thunder Bay Museum from September to April.   \n2023-2024 Thunder Bay Museum lecture series is sponsored by the Lakehead University Department of History.

SUMMARY:Kingston Historical Society October 2023 Meeting (In-Person and Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Kingston textile historian Joanna Dermenjian will report on her research on “Women’s domestic and charitable making of cloth and fibers”. In particular\, she will focus on the effort made by women in Kingston and across Canada during World War II to produce quilts for distribution to soldiers\, civilians and hospital in Britain and Europe. \n\nWe return to in-person meetings in January\, now at the Kingsbridge Retirement Community which has graciously agreed to let us use their very comfortable theatre lounge for our meetings. This is a most attractive location with comfortable armchairs and the most up-to-date audio-visual equipment. The spaciousness of this venue also allows us to offer light refreshments and an opportunity for socialization after each lecture. \nThe Kingsbridge Retirement Community\, 950 Centennial Drive is the tall building just south of Princess Street. Ask for the theatre lounge on the lower floor. Enter by the prominent door on the east side. Someone will be at the door to give you directions and to check your double vaccination status. There is free visitor parking along the north side of the building. Express buses #501 and 502 serve upper Princess Street to very near Kingsbridge. Bus #4 offers slower service along Princess Street from downtown. Use the Centennial Drive bus stop. \nCovid precautions: Please wear a mask on entry to the building\, but you may remove your mask once in the room. Proof of vaccination is mandatory. The building is kept meticulously sanitized.

SUMMARY:Peterborough Historical Society Public Lecture: “Peterborough Waterworks” Dennis Carter-Edwards
DESCRIPTION:A city’s waterworks is largely out of sight and normally attracts little attention. However\, the history of waterworks is central to understanding the history of urban growth and planning. In\nthe late nineteenth century\, Peterborough faced a crisis. Lack of a water works system placed the town at risk of destruction from fire while the absence of a sewer system created a serious health risk from water borne diseases. A ready supply of clean water was urgent. \nDennis Carter-Edwards\, retired Parks Canada historian\, will explore how the city fathers\, leading citizens and provincial authorities helped Peterborough achieve these essential services.
