Entrance is through the park side sliding doors. \nTopic: Cameos\, did you know? \nWhen: Monday\, May 27th\, at 07:30 pm \nWhat: Marie Descent will be talking about Cameos \nMarie\, a pharmacist by profession\, has always had a keen interest in gemstones. After taking several gemmology courses\, she developed a deep appreciation for antique jewellery\, fell into its rabbit hole\, and ultimately\, discovered the side tunnel of cameos. \nCameos have been around for thousands of years and there is a lot more than meets the eye when looking at them\, from the different materials from which they are crafted\, through their uses and the diverse subject matter they depict\, to how styles have evolved over the years. In short\, they are more than grandma’s old brooch. \nWhile reading and studying everything that she could about these miniature works of art\, Marie has become a passionate cameo enthusiast and collector. If you ask her how many she has\, she’ll sheepishly reply: “not enough”. \nWhile she doesn’t call herself an expert\, Marie has acquired much knowledge on cameos and is happy to share this with you. \nSo\, let Marie entertain you with things you might not have known about the world of cameos. SUMMARY:Doors Open Toronto @ John McKenzie House
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Ontario Historical Society and the historic John McKenzie House during 2024 Doors Open Toronto. This year’s theme is hidden histories. \nThe John McKenzie House was built in 1913\, in a style described as Queen Anne Revival\, Arts and Crafts\, and Edwardian. The grand\, red brick house is profiled by a large L-shaped veranda with stylized Doric columns. Significant interior features include the centre hall plan\, a vestibule door and sidelights with beveled and leaded glass\, a large leaded art glass window that lights the landing of the main staircase\, panelled doors\, and original radiators. In 1993\, the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) entered into a partnership with the former City of North York to preserve and restore the John McKenzie House\, which serves as the provincial headquarters of the OHS.

The play\, a prequel to the Peter Robinson immigration story\, is geared to the general public and students in Grades 6 to 12. \nTickets for the public fund-raiser are $30 per person or $40 for table seating. There is one public evening show only! It is recommended that you book your tickets before they’re gone. DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us for the next monthly meeting of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled for 7:30 pm\, Wednesday\, May 1\, 2024.  The meeting will be held in the Rousseau Room of the Swansea Town Hall.  \n\n \n\nIn our final meeting before we break for the summer\, the Swansea Historical Society welcomes speaker Chris Higgins.   In seventeen years as a teacher at Swansea Public School\, Chris curated the school archives as a hobby. DESCRIPTION:The Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society (TBFCHS) is pleased to announce the “From the Ashes of the Old: The History\, Loss\, and Memory of the Finnish Labour Temple” event\, taking place on Saturday April 27\, 2024 at the Thunder Bay Museum on 425 Donald Street East at 2 PM\, free and open to the public. This event will serve as the 50th anniversary commemoration of the TBFCHS\, a not-for-profit member-supported organization founded in 1974. \nThis milestone offers an opportunity for reflection on the Finnish Labour Temple\, an important cultural landmark tragically lost in a fire on December 22\, 2021. TBFCHS members Saku Pinta\, Jorma Halonen\, Kathy Toivonen\, and Sara Janes will deliver presentations on topics related to the history\, loss\, and memory of the Finnish Labour Temple. Also\, the materials recovered from the time capsule – buried in the cornerstone of the building for nearly 113 years – will be on public display for the first time. The event will be followed by the TBFCHS annual general meeting. \n“The Society has been a unique undertaking right from the start\,” observes TBFCHS President Saku Pinta. “Our founding members represented the local Finnish community in nearly all of its diversity\, no small task given the political and religious differences which have often proved divisive over the years.” Pinta notes that this “unity in diversity” in service of historical inquiry has been a source of strength and helps to explain the longevity of the TBFCHS. “As a member-supported organization\, we have served as the leading voice of Finnish Canadian history in the region for 50 years through the efforts of the community itself\, telling our own stories and preserving our own history.” \nSince 1974\, the TBFCHS has made multiple outstanding and pioneering contributions to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Finnish Canadians in northwestern Ontario. Beyond individual achievements\, this includes but is not limited to: \n– the publication of four books\, the most recent\, A Century of Sport in the Finnish Community of Thunder Bay (co-published with The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame)\, won the Communication and Best in Show awards from the International Sports Heritage Association in 2014\n– numerous public presentations\, notably a series of historical panels that were on display in the Hoito Restaurant for many years\n– the compiling of an archive – housed in the Lakehead University Archives – of thousands of historical documents\, photographs\, and oral histories of various Finnish organizations\, individuals\, and activities in Thunder Bay and the surrounding region\n– organizing the “Increasing Access to Finnish Language Archives” project in 2018-2019\, with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Documentary Heritage Communities Program\, which digitized and translated key historical documents from Finnish to the English-language for the first time\n– contributing to the recovery of the Finnish Labour Temple time capsule in April 2022\, thanks to the work of the late Marc Metsäranta.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday April 11\, 2024 at 1pm for the next Phoenix Seniors Club event at the Heritage Hall\, 83 Essex Street\, Guelph.  The Heritage Hall has been recently renovated and is fully accessible.  Refreshments will be provided and transportation is available.  This event is presented in collaboration with The Buttahfly Initiative. \nThis month our guest speaker will be Sya Van Geest\, storyteller\, local volunteer and activist. \nSya is a member of the Guelph Guild of Storytellers and an avid veteran storyteller comfortable telling to all ages.  She’s a regular volunteer in schools\, children’s groups\, seniors homes\, church groups and special events and a teacher in the craft of storytelling.  She is an experienced educator with over 30 years as a classroom teacher\, teacher librarian\, consultant and author of curricula and short stories in both elementary and high schools. \nSya was a recipient of Ontario Library Association Distinguished Service Award in 2004\, the Guelph Women of Distinction for Voluntary Community in 2010\, and the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow in 2021.  Sya is a founding member of ‘Guelph GoGo Grandmothers’ which is part of a global grandmother movement supporting the ‘African Grandmothers Campaign’ of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.\nFor more information or to register: \nPhone: (519) 837-2519 or email: info@guelphblackheritage.ca

DESCRIPTION:Coming April 8th is a total eclipse! If you are as excited as we are come out and celebrate with us by making craft rovers! Napanee is lucky enough to be on the path of totality for the solar eclipse\, meaning the moon will completely block out the sun; this won’t happen in our area again until 2079. To celebrate the moon (the “star” of any solar eclipse) we’re making our own toy Lunar Roving Vehicle to go with the 3 leftover from the Apollo 15\, 16\, & 17 missions that are still on the moon today. Have fun decorating your rover and creating a pipe cleaner astronaut to go rolling along on earth as if it were on the moon. \nNo pre-registration required\, however\, capacity and supplied are limited.
