Colin Coates nous parlera de la culture politique au Canada sous Louis XIV \nDans le Canada de Louis XIV\, les autorités coloniales ont tenté de reproduire l’autorité royale française. Transposées dans la colonie de la vallée du Saint-Laurent\, où une petite population française vivait aux côtés des communautés autochtones\, ces pratiques métropolitaines ont acquis une signification nouvelle. \nMon livre sur la culture politique au Canada sous Louis XIV examine le pouvoir royal tel qu’il se manifestait dans les rituels (entrées solennelles\, Te Deum\, processions)\, la rhétorique (luttes politiques autour des cabales et des factions) et les objets (portraits\, bustes royaux\, monnaie\, édifices\, cartes et recensements). SUMMARY:Toronto Railway Museum - Chinese Heritage in Canada: The Canadian Pacific Railway and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The history of Chinese heritage in Canada is often introduced through a single storyline\, the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Thousands of Chinese laborers helped to lay the foundation of this nation\, who endured harsh working conditions\, discriminatory pay\, and exclusion from recognition. \nThis talk celebrates Chinese heritage in Canada by recognizing the importance of this point in our history. In the meantime\, this talk also highlights that this is not the only storyline for Chinese Canadians\, it moves beyond the railway to explore how Chinese communities are established in Canada despite decades of legislated discrimination. \nLastly\, the talk explores Chen’ own experience as a Chinese woman working in public transit today in Canada\, on how Chinese heritage in Canada is not only something inherited\, but something actively lived. I want to challenge the audiences to rethink Chinese heritage\, beyond the figures of historical hardship\, but as ongoing contributors to the system that keeps Canada moving. \nAbout our speaker: \nYeeman is the Director for the TTC’s Farecard team. She oversees a team that is responsible for the TTC’s fare payment system\, including system performance and quality assurance. The TTC is the largest Canadian transit agency\, and third largest in North America\, serving approximately 1.7 million riders daily across the subways\, buses\, streetcars and paratransit network. \nPrior to her current role\, Yeeman worked in various roles within the TTC\, in areas of Operations and Infrastructure\, Training Development\, and Maintenance. In 2023\, Yeeman publicly spoke on the investigation of the Scarborough Rapid Transit incident and the discontinuation of the line. Yeeman is also a published industry author on public sector technology modernization. \nYeeman received her B.A. in Global and Organizational Development from Queen’s University\, a Post Graduate Certificate from Seneca College in Human Resources Management\, as well as a Project Management Professional Certification from the Project Management Institute. \nRegister for Chinese Heritage in Canada: The CPR and Beyond

Le bus #61 s’arrête à la rue Lytton – vous pouvez le prendre à la station de métro Eglinton (ligne 1) ou à la station Avenue (ligne 5) en traversant la rue\, l’arrêt pour le bus #61 est au coin nord/est d’Avenue Road et d’Eglinton ouest\nArrivée : Métro Eglinton (ligne 1) \nGuides : Nicole Baboulène et Rolande Smith\nQuelques petites côtes \nLa Mud River est une des nombreuses ‘’rivières cachées’’ (Lost Rivers) de Toronto. Nous suivrons – en surface – ses traces sur un petit parcours. Elle prend sa source à la hauteur du parc Downsview\, et se jette dans la rivière Don près des Brick Works. Bien qu’enterrée\, il est possible de suivre son cours grâce aux variations de terrain dans le quartier. \nUn quartier qui fut un temps connu et occupé par des Premières Nations. Plus tard il y eut des usines\, des maraîchages\, un club de chasse et bien plus. SUMMARY:Doors Open Toronto @ John McKenzie House
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Ontario Historical Society and the historic John McKenzie House during 2025 Doors Open Toronto. Visitors will have the chance to explore the historic house and headquarters of the OHS\, and learn how the historic building was saved by the community\, and still functions as an active community space to this day. \nThe John McKenzie House was built in 1913\, in a style described as Queen Anne Revival\, Arts and Crafts\, and Edwardian. The grand\, red brick house is profiled by a large L-shaped veranda with stylized Doric columns. Significant interior features include the centre hall plan\, a vestibule door and sidelights with beveled and leaded glass\, a large leaded art glass window that lights the landing of the main staircase\, panelled doors\, and original radiators. In 1993\, the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) entered into a partnership with the former City of North York to preserve and restore the John McKenzie House\, which serves as the provincial headquarters of the OHS.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society - Queen Street East Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Toronto’s First Post Office\, in partnership with 183 Gallery Amazing Moss Park\, for a new walking tour that will explore the history and architecture of Queen Street East in the Old Town neighbourhood. Meeting at Toronto’s First Post Office\, participants will be shown how the street has changed through carefully curated stops that will bring to light the various businesses and historical events that have shaped the Old Town area. The tour will end at 183 Gallery Amazing Moss Park where participants can enjoy the 2026 Contact Photography Festival. All proceeds from tickets sales will be going to support Toronto’s First Post Office. Pre-registration is required and two time slots are available.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first Mass known to have been celebrated in Peterborough this June\, and has arranged for a Bicentennial Mass and Procession to take place on Sunday\, June 7 at 10:30am at St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral to commemorate the occasion. The Mass will be held with the Apostolic Nuncio\, Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič and Archbishop Michael Mulhall of the Diocese of Kingston.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis historical event is significant to the Peter Robinson Emigration\, as most of the emigrants were Catholic and would have attended this Mass\, celebrated by Father Ahearn on June 5\, 1825 in Government House\, Peter Robinson’s headquarters at the corner of Simcoe and Water Streets. After they had settled into their new home\, one of their next priorities\, as expressed in their address to Governor General Maitland during his visit to the Peterborough area\, was for priests “for the consolations of our holy religion.” This request was accommodated and before long both the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough and St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral (built thanks to the hard work of the emigrants themselves) were established.\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’re curious to learn more about the importance of faith to the Peter Robinson emigrants and the history of the Diocese and of St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral\, we highly encourage you to check out the two-part interview with Father Tom Lynch\, Rector at the Cathedral\, on our YouTube Channel.

DESCRIPTION:Ingredients for Queer Food and the Makings of a Feminist Restaurant\nAlex Ketchum\, McGill University \nCoinciding with the 50th anniversary of the trailblazing restaurant Mother Courage of New York City\, Alex Ketchum’s book Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants\, Cafes\, and Coffeehouses was the first history of the more than 230 feminist and lesbian-feminist restaurants\, cafés\, and coffeehouses that existed from 1972 to the present. \nIn celebration of Pride Month\, the Culinary Historians of Canada has invited Alex Ketchum to discuss how these Canadian and American eateries were and continue to be key sites of cultural and political significance. These institutions served an essential role for multiple social justice movements including women’s liberation\, LGBTQ equality\, and food justice\, as well as providing a training ground for women workers and entrepreneurs. \nThursday\, June 18\, 2026\n7:30-9:00 pm EST\n(virtual event on Zoom) \nTickets on sale through Eventbrite\n$15.00 – $23.50 plus service fee \nAlex Ketchum (she/her) is an Associate Professor at McGill University’s Institute for Gender\, Sexuality\, and Feminist Studies (IGSF). She is an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada: College of New Scholars. Dr. Ketchum is the Director of the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab.
