DESCRIPTION:This downtown walking tour\, led by local historians Elwood Jones and Don Willcock\, will tell the story of Peterborough’s first cemetery\, which was located in what is now the site of Confederation Park\, the Armouries\, and the former Peterborough Collegiate. Established in 1825 and used as a cemetery until 1854\, the grounds have had a long history which will be highlighted in detail on this tour.\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets to this tour cost $20 each and can be purchased on Eventbrite. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon tea and tour in storied Hutchison House\, one of Peterborough’s oldest stone buildings. Initially inhabited by the town’s first resident doctor; John Hutchison provided care for some of the Peter Robinson immigrants after their arrival. During the course of this bus tour you’ll also partake in more intriguing visits. Kawartha Ancestral Research Association (KARA) is ‘a genealogy and heritage site for family historians’ researching in the region. While there\, you’ll have an opportunity to view KARA’s photography exhibit\, Descendants in Our Time\, curated for visitors for this Bicentennial year. Trent Valley Archives (TVA) will also welcome the group. TVA is an organization advocating for the preservation and accessibility of historic archives of the region\, housing more than 1000 cubic feet of ‘documents relating to the people\, events and places connected with the Trent Valley.’ This intriguing afternoon will include a view of the magnificent Peterborough Lift Lock\, a National Historic site and part of the Trent Severn Waterway. The Lift Lock represents engineering feats of the early 20th century\, as well as the immense grit of those who took part in its construction\, including grandchildren of the Peter Robinson Emigrants. \nGood to Know: This bus tour requires ticket purchase in advance and is subject to availability. SUMMARY:Toronto Branch OGS - The Toronto History Lecture "Toronto’s Streetcars – How the Past Shapes the Present"
DESCRIPTION:The Toronto History Lecture was inaugurated in 2011 in memory of well-known local and family historian Paul McGrath and his love for telling people about Toronto and its past. Toronto Branch assumed responsibility for the lecture series in 2012\, ensuring that it will continue as an annual event for years to come. It is free to attend and open to the public. \nSpeakers: Brian and Michael Doucet\nOnline via Zoom. August 5 at 7:00 pm \nToronto’s streetcars are an icon of the city and one of Canada’s busiest transit networks. Since the 1960s\, the city has been home to North America’s largest streetcar system. Both today’s streetcar network and the wider city in which they run are heavily influenced by 150 years of transit and transportation history. The creation of the Toronto Transit Commission in 1921 was one of the first examples of a municipally owned transit system and the investments the TTC made throughout the 1920s created a state-of-the-art network that extended service into new suburbs. \nPresenters Brian and Michael Doucet will weave the story of the streetcars with one of an ascendant city which transformed over the past 75 years from a modest\, predominantly British and provincial city\, to Canada’s leading metropolis and one of the world’s most multicultural cities. The streetcars have shaped many neighbourhoods and have ensured that they have remained connected and liveable places. Today\, as a new generation of light rail transit lines is being developed\, this connectivity also shapes a new geography of inequality\, with streetcar lines anchoring waves of new investment and gentrification. \nHead and shoulders photo of speakers Michael and Brian Doucet with iron gridwork of the Bathurst Street bridge in the backgroundDr. Brian Doucet and Dr. Michael Doucet are a father-son team of academics who have spent their careers researching cities and urban change. Pre-registration is required and spots are limited! \nAbout Our Speaker:  \nInternational exhibitor\, author and speaker\, Ingo G. Nessel has been collecting stamps since childhood. While growing up in his native Montreal\, early collections in the 1950’s were formed from his parents’ origin of Germany\, as well as his own roots in Canada. In addition to his home club\, the Bramalea Stamp Club\, Ingo is Past President of the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada; a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada and the Royal Philatelic Society London. \nHe is currently Vice President at Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation. His collecting specialties include Hong Kong; Canada’s 1985-1991 50c Parliament Booklets; a topical collection of sheep; Queen Elizabeth stamp and Royal Household mail; and any philatelic stamp or cover that catches his fancy. DESCRIPTION:Join our Museum Coordinator as we explore some of the major riots\, uprisings\, and upsets that occurred in the Town of York and the early City of Toronto throughout the 18th and 19th centuries\, and the outcomes that led to lasting societal and political changes. \nThis tour is part of our Annual Summer Walking Tour Series. It begins on the steps of St. James Cathedral (facing King Street East) and end at Toronto’s First Post Office Museum (260 Adelaide Street East). Initially inhabited by the town’s first resident doctor; John Hutchison provided care for some of the Peter Robinson immigrants after their arrival. During the course of this bus tour you’ll also partake in more intriguing visits. Kawartha Ancestral Research Association (KARA) is ‘a genealogy and heritage site for family historians’ researching in the region. While there\, you’ll have an opportunity to view KARA’s photography exhibit\, Descendants in Our Time\, curated for visitors for this Bicentennial year. Trent Valley Archives (TVA) will also welcome the group. TVA is an organization advocating for the preservation and accessibility of historic archives of the region\, housing more than 1000 cubic feet of ‘documents relating to the people\, events and places connected with the Trent Valley.’ This intriguing afternoon will include a view of the magnificent Peterborough Lift Lock\, a National Historic site and part of the Trent Severn Waterway. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the heart of the summer harvest season with a good old-fashioned Corn Roast on Sunday\, August 17 from 10 am to 4 pm at Lang Pioneer Village Museum! It will be a day filled with summer harvest-themed fun that the whole family is sure to enjoy. Hop aboard a horse-drawn wagon ride and tour the historic village in style as you discover the many ways early settlers used corn. View a variety of summer harvest-related demonstrations including threshing\, bagging\, fanning mill\, corn husk braiding\, and corn shelling. \nThroughout the village there will be a variety of historic demonstrations on display\, including natural dyeing using\nnative plants\, flop mattress repairing and stuffing\, stitching with the Northumberland Hills Stitchery Guild\, weaving on\nthe Jacquard loom\, wood turning with the Kawartha Woodturners Guild and the Peterborough Artisan Centre Wood\nTurners\, rug hooking with the Northumberland Rug Hookers\, grinding at the Grist Mill\, and more.\nStop and rest for a while as you enjoy some steaming fire-cooked corn smothered in butter at the fire pit\, or visit the\nKeene Hotel for a sweet treat and cold beverage. The Keene Lions Club food truck will be located in the Peterborough\nCounty Agricultural Heritage Building courtyard selling BBQ goods (cash only)\, and Ben’s Kettle Corn will be popping\nup fresh kettle corn. If you are feeling adventurous\, enter the corn-on-the-cob eating contest taking place on the\nVillage Green at 2 pm. Be sure to stop by the Cheese Factory for some fresh Empire Cheese curd and bread to take\nhome with you. \nCheck out the many entries that were submitted for the Peterborough Agricultural Society’s Homecraft Show in the\nPeterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building. It begins on the steps of St. James Cathedral (facing King Street East) and end at Toronto’s First Post Office Museum (260 Adelaide Street East).
