Over the course of the 19th century\, outdoor signs using wood\, paint\, and gas were joined by metal\, paper\, and electricity\, with measured restraint in the early years giving way to flamboyant abundance by the end of the Victorian era.

DESCRIPTION:LA FRANCE ANTARTIQUE : UN PROJET COLONIAL À RIO DE JANEIRO AU XVIème SIÈCLE \nConférencier : André Sena\, Docteur en Histoire Politique par l’Université de l’État de Rio de Janeiro. \nConnue dans l’historiographie bresilienne comme “La France Antarctique” cette présentation discutera sur ce qui fut une tentative coloniale française au XVIe siècle dans la région de Rio de Janeiro\, au Brésil. Fondée en 1555\, elle représente l’une des premières incursions européennes dans cette région. Sous la direction de Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon\, la colonie devint un refuge pour les protestants persécutés en Europe. Cependant\, des conflits avec les Portugais conduisirent à sa chute en 1567. Bien que de courte durée\, La France Antarctique reste un chapitre fascinant de l’histoire des explorations européennes dans le Nouveau Monde.

DESCRIPTION:Hello everyone! \nPlease join us for our first Speaker Night of the year. \nWhen: Wednesday – February 19\, 2025 – 7:30 PM \nWhere: The Coach House on the Erchless Estate (corner of King and Navy) \nWhat: The story of St. Mary’s Pioneer Cemetery. \nFor those interested in Oakville history\, cemeteries\, and genealogical research\, come hear the fascinating story of St. Mary’s Pioneer Cemetery. In 2020\, Ms. Terry Murphy and Mr. Michael Johnson set themselves a goal to find out something about every stone in this park-like home to some of Oakville’s oldest residents. \nThe names on these monuments became people whose stories they felt deserved attention. Here lie people who weathered the crises of the past two centuries\, gave birth to families\, started businesses that laid the foundations of Oakville\, and built the community we have inherited. The worn and broken stones called out with particular poignancy. Who were the individuals who donated their hard-earned money to erect\, with such deep affection\, these memorials to their loved ones? \nTerry will review the “detective” tools they found most helpful in identifying many previously illegible (and even buried) stones. What began as a challenge became a labour of love\, as the residents of the cemetery became family. The more they researched\, the more they realized how story-rich the cemetery is and how important it is to preserve pioneer cemeteries. \nPlease come early as seating is limited. \nSee you all there!

DESCRIPTION:Join historian Dr. Jane McGaughey as she discusses the life and times of Colonel James FitzGibbon\, one of the best-known soldiers in 19th century Upper Canada\, and a familiar face to many in Toronto. Arriving in in the colony as a dashing young officer\, he further earned the public’s esteem for his roles in stemming sectarian violence\, helping others during the cholera epidemic of 1832\, and defending Toronto from rebels in 1837. In private\, he lived a life of adventure\, romance\, and tragedy more befitting a character from a Jane Austen or Bridgerton novel. Given all that\, Dr. Jane McGaughey will ask the pertinent question as to why James Fitzgibbon has become one of the more forgotten characters in Canada’s past. This event will be hosted online and pre-registration is required!

DESCRIPTION:At the ABHS meeting on Monday February 10 noted historian Ken Weber will discuss a number of truly interesting women who have accompanied their spouses to the peak of Canada’s political landscape and how they approached their role as prime minister’s wife in quite different ways. Several wives were supportive helpmates while some others came to dislike the position intensely and tried to remain hidden. Interestingly despite the incredible pressures put on marriages that are in the public eye\, to date there have been no less than five great love matches among Canada’s prime ministral couples. \nThis is sure to be an entertaining and interesting presentation. Hope to see you there! \nThis evening will also include the Annual General Meeting. Many of the current executive have decided to put their names forward for 2025 but we need a secretary and a director to have a full slate.
