SUMMARY:27th Annual Father's Day Smoke & Steam Show at Lang Pioneer Village Museum
DESCRIPTION:Treat dad to a day filled with tractors and powerful equipment this Father’s Day with the 27th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. The Museum’s 2024 event season kicks off on Sunday\, June 16 with a Father’s Day event that the whole family will enjoy. From 10 am to 3 pm\, watch as local collectors bring to life some of the oldest antique tractors and steam engines around and compete for over 20 awards. \nAt 12 noon\, watch as competitors participate in a variety of tractor games\, including balance challenges and lawn tractor races. Throughout the village\, view displays of smoke and steam collectibles\, hit and miss engines\, antique tool collections\, model train displays\, and more. \nLean about the many ways power was generated in the 1800s. View a variety of historic demonstrations including broad axe hand hewing\, natural dyeing\, weaving\, broom making\, wood turning\, grinding at the Grist Mill\, and more. Hop on board a tractor and wagon ride and tour the historic village in style. Take some time to pause and enjoy live music by Lotus Wight. Participate in some old- fashioned games in the schoolyard. Don’t forget to visit the farm animals on loan from Harley Farms for the summer! \nIf you are looking for sustenance\, there will be plenty of options available. Demonstrators and visitors can enjoy a pancake breakfast served while supplies last in the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building (additional fee applies). Refreshments and sweet treats will be available for purchase throughout the day at the Keene Hotel or stop by Ben’s Kettle Corn who will be popping up fresh kettle corn. The Keene Lions Club food truck will be onsite selling BBQ goods and there will be fresh Empire Cheese curd available for purchase in the Cheese Factory. For those looking to enjoy a cold one\, traditional European brewed craft beer will be available for purchase courtesy of Haven Brewing Company. If you haven’t already over-indulged in delicious treats\, take part in the pie-eating contest on the Village Green at 2 pm but be sure to register early as there are only a limited number of spaces available! \nThe day will conclude with a tractor parade through the historic village beginning at 3 pm. Admission is $15 for adults\, $10 for students and seniors (60+)\, $7 for youths (ages 5-14) and free for children under 5. SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Annual Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Tour Leaders: Patrick Okens and Lance Gleich\n\nTopic: “Could the Humber River Have Become Brûlé Lake?”\nTime: 1:30 pm \nPlease mark your calendars for the FREE annual walking tour of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled between 1:30 and 3:30 pm on Saturday afternoon\, June the 8th\, 2024. \nIn 1929\, a coalition of amateur sports leaders called for the creation of a grand rowing-regatta course on the lower Humber River between Bloor Street and Lake Ontario. Had it happened\, the largely natural river we experience today would have been transformed into a two-kilometre-long recreational area with significant implications for local development\, as well as the environment and future natural disasters including Hurricane Hazel. This walk will explore the story of “Brûlé Lake” by walking the length of the course. We will explore how it almost came to be\, what it could have meant\, why the effort failed\, and how the saga could be viewed as symbolic of the end of the predominance of amateur sports in favour of professional sports in Toronto. \nThe walk will be co-led by Patrick Okens\, whose career in sport has included management roles at Row Ontario\, Vancouver 2010\, and Toronto 2015. His book Blues Before Sunrise: Rowing at the University of Toronto was published in 2023. Walk co-leader Lance Gleich has a life membership in the Swansea Historical Society and has been leading its annual walks since 2014. He is currently president of Heritage York\, vice-president of DynaRail\, and secretary of Walk Toronto. \nThe walk will begin at the Rousseaux Site off the South Kingsway\, where parking is available. The starting location is on the south side of the Petro-Canada station at the foot of South Kingsway.  It is also just across the South Kingsway from the Ripley Avenue stop on the 77 Swansea bus\, and a short walk from the 501 Queen streetcar. The walk will end near the Old Mill subway station\, where paid parking is available. SUMMARY:1784 Celebration of the 240th founding of Cornwall and the United Counties of Stormont\, Dundas and Glengarry
DESCRIPTION:What do Jane Fonda and the founder of the Chrysler Motor Corporation have in common? Both are descendents of Loyalist settlers who came to Canada in 1784 as refugees from the American Revolution. Both families settled in what is now Dundas County where many German Loyalists found homes.  Other Loyalist settlers took land spreading from Lancaster to the Bay of Quinte. \nThis year on June 6th\, it will be 240 years since John Johnson’s loyalist refugees from the American Revolution brought their boats ashore in a wilderness area that was to be their new homes. The settlers named their settlement New Johnstown and they spread from here to other sites along the river that were called the Royal Townships. Today these names are more familiar to us as Cornwall and the Counties of Stormont\, Dundas and Glengarry. \nOn June 7 to 9th\, step back into the past and rediscover the beginning of Cornwall and the SDG Counties when for three days Lamoureux Park will transform to what life was like when these new settlers arrived. In the park by the St. Lawrence River\, a tented village will spring up replicating New Johnstown as it was in 1784.  Visit the encampment to learn how these early settlers survived their arrival and flourished to build today’s vibrant city and counties and eventually lead to the establishment of the Province of Ontario. \nThis area of the province is steeped in history and to display that history\, many of the region’s historical and heritage groups will be presenting exhibits\, presentations and demonstrations in a large tent along Water Street. For music lovers\, concerts will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings presenting French\, Celtic and Akwesasne entertainers. The Cornwall Community Museum will be open for tours and will introduce its new exhibit on “1784”. In addition\, the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada will be hosting their national conference in Cornwall. This celebration of our past is presented by the SDG Historical Society and is a free event open to all. \nIt’s not often that you can revisit history or see how your ancestors lived and coped\, but June 7-9th will provide that unique experience and also be a time to celebrate the 240th anniversary of Cornwall and the SDG Counties. After taking several gemmology courses\, she developed a deep appreciation for antique jewellery\, fell into its rabbit hole\, and ultimately\, discovered the side tunnel of cameos. \nCameos have been around for thousands of years and there is a lot more than meets the eye when looking at them\, from the different materials from which they are crafted\, through their uses and the diverse subject matter they depict\, to how styles have evolved over the years. In short\, they are more than grandma’s old brooch. \nWhile reading and studying everything that she could about these miniature works of art\, Marie has become a passionate cameo enthusiast and collector. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Ontario Historical Society and the historic John McKenzie House during 2024 Doors Open Toronto. This year’s theme is hidden histories. \nThe John McKenzie House was built in 1913\, in a style described as Queen Anne Revival\, Arts and Crafts\, and Edwardian. The grand\, red brick house is profiled by a large L-shaped veranda with stylized Doric columns. Significant interior features include the centre hall plan\, a vestibule door and sidelights with beveled and leaded glass\, a large leaded art glass window that lights the landing of the main staircase\, panelled doors\, and original radiators. In 1993\, the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) entered into a partnership with the former City of North York to preserve and restore the John McKenzie House\, which serves as the provincial headquarters of the OHS.

SUMMARY:Trent Valley Archives Production "Tide of Hope"
DESCRIPTION:Tickets now on sale for Trent Valley Archives (TVA) new fundraising and educational theatre initiative. Trent Valley Archives Theatre (TVAT) will produce its first public fundraiser on May 16\, 2024\, at 7:30 PM at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre. \nThe mission of TVAT is to bring history to life on stage while raising funds for TVA. \nIts first offering is Tide of Hope by Peterborough playwright Ed Schroeter. The play\, a prequel to the Peter Robinson immigration story\, is geared to the general public and students in Grades 6 to 12. \nTickets for the public fund-raiser are $30 per person or $40 for table seating. There is one public evening show only! It is recommended that you book your tickets before they’re gone. You can purchase online at https://tickets.markethall.org/tide24 or buy tickets by phone at 705-775-1503. \nThere will also be two performances for school groups on Wednesday\, May 15 at 10 am and 1 pm. Teachers can book their classes by email at trentvalleyarchivestheatre@gmail.com. Admission is $250 for a class of 25 students. Teachers may request free seats for themselves and up to four volunteer chaperones at the time of booking. \nTide of Hope follows David Nagle an Irish land agent and rent collector who must flee to Upper Canada with the Peter Robinson settlers of 1825 to escape the wrath of Irish rebels fighting against English tyranny.
