SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Meeting "Grenadier Pond"
DESCRIPTION:Please mark your calendars for the next meeting of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled for 7:30 pm\, Wednesday evening\, November the 6th\, 2024.  We hope you can join us\, either in-person or on-line. \nOur speaker for November will be Ken Stark\, discussing both the natural and human history surrounding the Grenadier Pond. \nThe presentation will cover the Pond’s geological formation and the evolution of human activity ever since.  Once primarily a source of food\, it now provides visitors an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities\, including many recreational pursuits.  As the jewel of High Park\, Grenadier Pond supports a variety of flora and fauna\, some of which are unique to the region.  As with any body of water\, there is an element of risk to its users.  A summary of the unfortunate accidents and tragedies of the last 100+years will be discussed.  Also to be shared are a few interesting stories from the past involving Grenadier Pond as a central character. \nKen is a long-time Swansea resident who lives close to Grenadier Pond.  He regularly visits the pond\, enjoying its beauty and as a place of respite in the middle of the city.  From childhood memories as a visitor to Toronto in the 1960’s through the present\, Ken has participated in various activities on and around the Pond.  At the October Annual General Meeting\, he was elected Vice-President of the Swansea Historical Society. \nThe November meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format so that participants can attend in-person at the Town Hall (95 Lavinia Avenue) or connect on-line using the Zoom tool.

From 6 pm to 9 pm each night\, immerse yourself in a 19th-century All Hallows’ Eve celebration with a modern twist. \nHold onto your seat as a tractor and wagon takes you deeper into the darkness of the village. Discover the history of coffins and body snatching at the Carpenter Shop. Meet Stingy Jack at the Blacksmith Shop and listen to his sorry tale. Witness a traditional 1890s Halloween party at the Milburn House and take part in some party games. Take a stroll through the graveyard at the\nFitzpatrick House. Be sure to watch out for the man-eating plant inside! Hear the story of werewolves and give your best howl at the moon. \nVisit the witch’s lair and see her swampy brew bubbling in her cauldron over the fire. Don’t get lost in the maze if you are brave enough to enter. Listen to sea shanties and jokes in the Pirate Hall\, and see if you can find all the items on their treasure map. You just might receive a piece of treasure for yourself if you do! \nParticipate in a class on poisons and potions in the School House. Do you dare feel what is lurking in the mystery crocks at the Tinsmith Shop\, or try a treat from the Botched Bakery? Witness the mind-bending magic show in the Weaver Shop (sets at 6:30\, 7:30 and 8:30)! Curious about what your future holds? If you ask her nicely\, Madam Fortune just might reveal what is to come. \nListen to the Michi Saagiig people’s tale of the Wendigo. Learn about paranormal investigations undertaken at Lang Pioneer Village Museum by ghost hunters the Paranormal Seekers\, and see some of the specialized equipment they use to make their discoveries. Warm up by the fire and witness the magic of the Samhain Celtic fire festival. \nIf your nerves are rattled and making you hungry\, stop by the Cider Barn for some delicious hot chocolate and monster cookies\, or visit the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building (PCAHB) for a hot dog or grilled cheese sandwich (additional fee applies). You can also purchase candy and sweet treats in the General Store as you learn about the origins of trick-or-treating.\nDon’t forget to come disguised to blend in with the spirits and ghosts lurking in the Village\, or have your face painted in the PCAHB Great Hall by Faces by 2. SUMMARY:51th Annual Symposium of the Ontario Archaeological Society
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to attend the 51st Annual Symposium of the Ontario Archaeological Society (OAS) from October 25 to 27\, 2024! It is being hosted by the Thunder Bay Chapter of the OAS in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology\, Lakehead University and OAS Board of Directors. The conference will take place on the boreal forest Traditional Lands of the Ojibway of Fort William First Nation\, signatory to the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850\, and the Homelands of the Métis Nation of Ontario and Red Sky Métis Independent Nation. Most events will be held at the Valhalla Hotel & Conference Centre\, which has great views of Anemki-Wajiw (Thunder Mountain or Mount McKay\, sacred to Fort William First Nation and a Thunder Bay landmark). The Friday night reception will take place at the Thunder Bay Museum and Sunday afternoon there will be field trips to Fort William Historical Park and Early period (PalaeoIndigenous) archaeological sites.

DESCRIPTION:Kensington Market Historical Society and Koffler Arts are proud to co-present talks by distinguished artists Bruce Eves and Andy Fabo. \nEves was an integral member of CEAC\, the Centre for Experimental Art and Communication (1976-1978)\, which had its roots in the Kensington Art Association (1973-1978). Fabo was one of six emerging Canadian artists who created and exhibited in Toronto as ChromaZone/ Chromatique Collective (1981-1985)\, also situated in Kensington Market. Both speakers will discuss their personal involvement in CEAC and ChromaZone\, and will highlight the significant and lasting contributions of these artist-run collectives in Toronto’s contemporary art scene. \nThis talk is presented in honour of National Coming Out Day (Friday\, October 11\, 2024) as both artists have been producing unabashedly gay-themed art from their earliest days.

Throughout the village\, view a wide variety of historic demonstrations including cider pressing at the Cider Mill\, threshing\, mattress repair and stuffing\, natural dyeing\, chair caning\, broom making\, log hand-hewing\, sheep shearing\, wood turning by the Peterborough Artisan Centre Wood Turners\, spinning by Shepherd Hill Farms\, rug hooking by the Northumberland Rug Hookers Guild\, and more. View an antique clock and timepiece display brought by the Quinte Timekeepers\, and visit the Ayotte Cabin where historic reenactors\, the 41st Battalion of Brockville Rifles\, 1st Company\, will be performing drills and demonstrating military\nmarching. \nEnjoy traditional music performed by Al Kirby\, and hear the tale of “1862”\, a crankie theatre performed by Glen Caradus. Take a moment to relax and listen to the harvest hymns in the Glen Alda Church. As you stroll through the heart of Bolton\, the Albion Bolton Historical Society will share fascinating tales of the people\, events\, and industries that shaped this community. \nAt the end of the Tour the Albion Bolton Historical Society will unveil a new plaque dedicated to George Bolton\, the village founder at the western end of the Bolton Mill Park. Those unable to participate in the walk can meet at the entrance to the park at Queen Street North and proceed a short distance to the Plaque at approximately 11:30. The plaque is part of the Society’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society - Annual Governor Simcoe Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:As in past years\, this FREE guided walking tour will retrace a portion of Simcoe’s 1793 expedition up the Toronto Carrying Place portage route. As in past years\, Part 1 of the tour will start at 9:30 am at the Rousseau plaque (8 South Kingsway\, beside the Petro Canada station)\, heading north\, mainly along Riverside Drive\, and finishing near Bloor Street. After a break for lunch on Bloor Street\, Part 2 will start at 1:00 pm at the Alex Ling Fountain (north-west corner of Bloor and Jane Streets)\, and then head farther north\, mainly following residential streets a short distance east of the Humber River. Participants are free to join or leave the walk at any point along the route. \nPlease note: Registration for this walk is not required\, but we are suggesting that those planning to participate register through Eventbrite\, only if it’s convenient\, so that we can get an idea of how many people to expect.
