SUMMARY:Oakville Historical Society Speaker Night - "What Our Buildings Say About Us"
DESCRIPTION:The Oakville Historical Society i s pleased to announce the speaker for our September 16th “Speaker\nNight”\, presented by Shannon Kyles. Ms. Kyles will share how each new wave of settlement in\nOntario reflects not only the economic differences between one decade and the next\, but the way in\nwhich our culture has evolved. We respond to technological advances\, booms and busts\, and the\nshifting use of materials – acknowledging the architecture used for our homes\, businesses and\nhouses of worship is always the very best that we can do within the parameters of the current age \nWell known and respected for her knowledge on the subject\, Ms. Kyles has served as a columnist on\narchitecture for CBC’s “Fresh Air” for 9 years\, is the editor for “Arabella” magazine\, writing about\narchitecture\, as well as created a video series “In Praise of Older Windows”\, available on YouTube.\nLast year she published “The Story of Ontario Architecture”\, which will be available for sale at her talk.\nThis book is an in-depth look at architecture in Ontario\, with emphasis on the people who created the\nbuildings\, as well as the style and materials. She is passionate to share her knowledge to encourage\nall who are interested in our built heritage – to maintain it – and not knock it down. \nVery hands on\, she has been involved in the restoration of historic properties\, including the\nrestoration of an 1830s carriage house.\nShe also serves as a Guest Lecturer at the University of Guelph\, and holds membership in the\nCanadian Association of Heritage Professionals and the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. \nPlease join us on Wednesday September 16\, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the Coach House (right next door\nto the Oakville Historical Society)\, and learn more on this fascinating and historical topic.\nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Glengarry Fencibles Trust - 200th Anniversary Celebration of the College of Iona\, 1826
DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 2026\, you are invited to join us in celebrating the 200th anniversary of the formal opening of Ontario’s first college\, located at the Bishop’s House in St Raphaels. \nThe decision to establish the “College of Iona” was driven by missionary priest Alexander Macdonell\, who had a driving interest in education for all. He was convinced that a “Canada-centred education” was needed to safeguard against the infiltration of republican sentiments from the US after the War of 1812. \nWe are celebrating the significant contributions to education in Canada made by Alexander Macdonell. He opened the College with the purpose of training teachers and priests to serve the people of Upper Canada. He offered a classical education to students whose careers took them into business\, law\, and government in Ontario and Québec. \nView a sampling of Macdonell’s collection of archival letters and scholarly books as well as early mementos that represent daily life and education at the College some 200 years ago. \nLearn about the first professors and students who attended and the type of education offered. Discover more about Macdonell’s legacy in building a future for those who came to Upper Canada. \nWhile you are here\, see the wonderful progress made in the ongoing restoration work of the original home\, presbytery and office of Alexander Macdonell. He became a bishop in 1820 and lived in St Raphael’s from 1804 until the early 1830s when he relocated to Kingston. \nWith support from Canadian Heritage — Patrimoine canadien and the Township of South Glengarry\, the Program will begin at 2:00 pm at the Bishop’s House in St. Raphaels\, Ontario. There will be Exhibitions and Entertainment. On behalf of Glengarry Fencibles Trust\, we look forward to welcoming you on September 19\, 2026! We are a volunteer organization that owns the Bishop’s House and a Registered Charity incorporated through affiliation with The Ontario Historical Society.

SUMMARY:La Société d'histoire de Toronto: HISTORITOUR - Facettes de High Park

SUMMARY:Newcastle Village and District Historical Society Presentation: British Home Children in Clarington
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars! \nBritish Home Children in Clarington\nA Presentation by Sheila Dodd \nExplore the history and lives of the British Home Children who were placed in Clarington. Sheila Dodd will highlight the sending agencies\, receiving homes\, and the challenges many British Home Children faced once in Canada. \nFree admission \nAccredited speaker with Home Children Canada\, Sheila Dodd will be giving a brief history about the BHC child migration scheme and some of the sending agencies and receiving homes in the area. By using new case studies\, Sheila hopes to bring some of these indentured servants and labourers stories to life and show the challenges that most British Home Children faced once in Canada. Over 100\,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada from 1869-1948 and is a forgotten part of Canadian history that Sheila and others helped to keep alive.
