SUMMARY:Culinary Historians of Canada - Hearth Baking & eat make share: a taste of immigration
DESCRIPTION:CHC is hosting a visit to 2 museums in Burlington\, Ontario on the same day.  Join us in Burlington on July 11. \nIn the morning\, there will be a guided tour and hearth baking workshop at Ireland House.  This was the home of Joseph Ireland\, one of the earliest settlers to the area.  Several generations of the Ireland family lived on the property until 1985.  It is currently operated as a museum by the city of Burlington and showcases 3 distinct periods: 1850’s\, 1890’s\, 1920’s. \nAfter lunch at Ireland House (bring a lunch)\, we will move to Joseph Brant Museum for a presentation and time to explore eat make share: a taste of immigration.  This travelling exhibition created by the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax makes a stop in Burlington from April 18 to September 5. \nIreland House\n2168 Guelph Line\, Burlington\, ON L7P 5A8 \nJoseph Brant Museum\n1240 North Shore Boulevard East\, Burlington\, ON L7S 1C5 \nTickets on sale through Eventbrite until July 6\n$35.00 – $45.00 plus service fee \nRegistration fee includes admission to both museums\, guided tours\, and the baking workshop.  Participants must be at least 15 years of age. Provide your own transportation or carpool. Burlington can be reached by taking the GO train on the Lakeshore West line. DESCRIPTION:Witness a timeline of transportation as enthusiasts from across Ontario\nshowcase their antique and classic cars and vintage motorcycles during the 29th\nAnnual Transportation Day Car & Motorcycle Show\, taking place on Sunday\, July 12\,\nfrom 10 am to 4 pm at Lang Pioneer Village Museum.\nThroughout the village\, learn about how transportation has evolved over the years and\nthe roles various trades played in the development of transportation methods. Leisurely\nperuse the cars\, trucks\, and motorcycles of every make and model displayed \nthroughout the historic village\, and be sure to cast your vote for your favourite.\nTour the village by horse-drawn wagon and view a variety of historic demonstrations\, including log hand hewing\, Grist\nMill demonstrations\, a tongue-in-cheek suffrage meeting at the Town Hall\, and more. Take part in some schoolyard\ngames and races\, and make a craft to take home with you at the Ayotte Cabin. Be sure to check out the display\nbrought by the Peterborough Model Railroaders. Stop to relax and enjoy music from the 50s to 80s with DJ Del and\nJenny Jams in the PCAHB courtyard.\nRefreshments and sweet treats will be available for purchase throughout the day at the Keene Hotel\, or stop by Ben’s\nKettle Corn\, which will be popping up fresh kettle corn. The Keene Lions Club food truck will be on-site selling BBQ\ngoods (cash only). Fresh Empire Cheese curd\, bread\, and pickles on a stick will be available for purchase in the\nCheese Factory\, or enjoy pancakes on a stick sold by Lea’s Creations\nFor those wishing to bring their car\, truck\, or motorcycle to display\, participant registration runs from 8 am to 12 noon\,\nwith a $10 registration fee that includes admission into the village. The first 200 vehicles to enter will receive a\ncomplimentary dash plaque as a souvenir of their participation. Over 25 trophies will be awarded\, including the\ncoveted People’s Choice and Lang’s Choice. SUMMARY:2026 Toronto History Lecture: A Grocery Store\, a Library\, and the Struggle for Space: Black Community-Building in Toronto\, 1920s–1960
DESCRIPTION:The 15th annual Toronto History Lecture will be held online via Zoom on Tuesday\, August 4\, at 7:30 pm EDT. We hope you will join us! \nThe event is free to attend\, but you must register. (It will be recorded\, so if your schedule or time zone doesn’t accommodate 7:30\, you can time-shift.) \nThis year’s Toronto History Lecture tells the story of the Home Service Association\, a Black community organization in Toronto whose roots trace back to 1918\, emerging from wartime efforts to support Black servicemen. The organization relocated multiple times across the city after its early building was condemned\, continually adapting its programs to meet community needs. By the mid-twentieth century\, it operated from Bathurst Street as a vibrant community hub\, offering cultural programming\, a cooperative grocery store\, and a library. \nThis little-known history offers a compelling\, human-scale account of how communities in Toronto built spaces of belonging\, support\, and collective life. \nOur 2026 speaker\, the dynamic Dr. Melanie Knight\, is Professor of Sociology and Black Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research examines Black community organizing\, social movements\, and histories of collective life in Canada\, with a focus on archives and under-documented histories. \nThe Toronto History Lecture is free to attend but please register in advance for your Zoom link.

While the City of Ottawa is constantly working to improve access\, please note that not all parts of every facility are necessarily ‘accessible for all’ as facilities were built to meet accessibility standards of their time. This includes the second floor of the Main House which is only accessible by staircase. \nParking \nFree parking is available on-site at the Billings Estate National Historic Site\, located at 2100 Cabot Street in Ottawa. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the philatelic history of Toronto with expert Garfield Portch! \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an exciting evening of Toronto’s philatelic history with expert Garfield Portch at the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Foundation! \nGenerously sponsored by the Vincent Graves Greene Foundation\, enjoy an extensive presentation on the postal history and the history of the post office in Toronto. SUMMARY:Guelph Black Heritage Society - Reclaimed Routes Bus Tour; Exploring the Queen’s Bush
DESCRIPTION:Step aboard for a guided journey through the historic Queen’s Bush\, where Black freedom seekers established vibrant communities after escaping enslavement. \nAlong the route\, we’ll explore the stories of the families who built homes\, churches\, schools\, and cemeteries across what are now Waterloo Region and Wellington County. \nToday\, many of these sites have disappeared from the landscape\, but their history and legacy remain. \nThis tour offers an opportunity to uncover these often-overlooked stories and reflect on the resilience\, determination\, and contributions of early Black settlers in the region. \nDeparts: Heritage Hall\, 83 Essex Street\, Guelph \nTime: 12:00 PM (approximately 3 hours) \nCost: $25 per person (includes a picnic lunch) \nAdvance registration required.
