SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Annual Fundraiser: Banned & Brewed
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Town of York Historical Society’s Annual Fundraiser will take place on a new date\, May 1\, 2025\, to celebrate the City of Toronto’s 191st Birthday\, ahead of Museum month. After its colonial establishment in 1793\, the Town of York was incorporated on March 6\, 1834 as the City of Toronto marking its beginnings as a booming metropolis. The date isn’t the only thing changing this year. Traditionally\, our fundraiser has taken place at St. Lawrence Hall but due to construction setbacks\, our event will now be hosted at Campbell House Museum. Due to the smaller venue capacity\, we will be offering two different ticket types\, an in-person and virtual option\, to allow for all guests to participate. Virtual guests will have access to the keynote speaker’s presentation and the silent auction. \nThe Society will mark this anniversary by diving into the captivating history of beer and the temperance movement in the Town of York and the City of Toronto\, emphasizing the changes that both sides brought to the City. The Town of York Historical Society is happy to announce our special guest and keynote speaker\, beer expert and author\, Jordan St. John\, who will provide an insightful presentation on this relevant theme.  Following the success of our 2024 fundraiser\, the Society is excited to welcome our members and guests to Campbell House Museum to celebrate this intriguing topic. DESCRIPTION:The Albion Bolton Historical Society are participating in The Repair Cafe\, organized by EcoCaledon\, to held at the Caledon Senior’s Centre\, 7 Rotarian Way\, Bolton\, Saturday\, April 26\, 10 AM-2 PM. \nThe ABHS will be scanning and digitizing photographs/prints and negatives\, both colour and black & white. The process is limited to letter size photographs or smaller and medium format negatives. A limit of 2-3 scans per participant please. The digitized file can be down loaded onto the participant’s USB or e-mailed to them. We are hoping that local historical images would be shared with the ABHS to add to our photographic database and for preservation purposes. SUMMARY:Peter Robinson Irish Emigration Bicentennial Presentation
DESCRIPTION:A presentation about the Nine Ships 1825 – Peter Robinson Irish Emigration Bicentennial will take place at the Millbrook and Cavan Historical Society meeting on Friday April 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Millbrook Legion at 9 King Street East\, Millbrook\, Ontario. The public is welcome to attend. \nThe Peter Robinson Emigration of 1825 was a landmark initiative that brought over 2\,000 Irish men\, women\, and children to Canada to “the place at the end of the rapids” which the local First Nations at that time called Nogojiwanong. This laid the foundation for what would later be called Peterborough. This unique government experiment was aimed at testing the viability of British emigration policy by covering all expenses for settlers for 18 months. Each family’s journey and experiences were meticulously documented\, providing a rich archival resource. \nTo mark the Bicentennial\, the not-for-profit organization called Nine Ships 1825 Inc. has been formed to honour this chapter in Canadian history. Named after the nine ships that carried the Irish emigrants across the Atlantic in 1825\, these ships were named: the Fortitude\, John Barry\, Resolution\, Regulus\, Albion\, Star\, Elizabeth\, Amity\, and the Brunswick. They embarked from Cobh\, County Cork\, and set sail towards what was then Lower and Upper Canada. \nCultural resource manager and historian Dennis Carter-Edwards will speak to the significance of this emigration\, outline the journey and highlight the resources available to learn more. Past President of the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club\, Maureen Crowley\, and former Mayor of the Township of Selwyn\, Mary Smith\, will speak about previous commemorations of this emigration\, describe how Nine Ships 1825 was formed\, and what events all the community partners and heritage/historical groups are planning to have during 2025\, including special Bicentennial events during\nAugust 1-10\, 2025.

Jim Adams is a local historian and author who has been researching the history of one of West Toronto’s smallest neighbourhoods — Swansea’s neighbour to the north — “Runnymede”. He has been documenting its geographic\, cultural\, business\, and residential history. Join in a lively quiz\, and also learn about Jim’s first graphic little book\, featuring local war hero\, Fred Topham\, VC. \nThe April meeting will be held in the Rousseau Room at the Swansea Town Hall\, 95 Lavinia Avenue. DESCRIPTION:LA FRANCE ANTARTIQUE : UN PROJET COLONIAL À RIO DE JANEIRO AU XVIème SIÈCLE \nConférencier : André Sena\, Docteur en Histoire Politique par l’Université de l’État de Rio de Janeiro. \nConnue dans l’historiographie bresilienne comme “La France Antarctique” cette présentation discutera sur ce qui fut une tentative coloniale française au XVIe siècle dans la région de Rio de Janeiro\, au Brésil. Fondée en 1555\, elle représente l’une des premières incursions européennes dans cette région. Sous la direction de Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon\, la colonie devint un refuge pour les protestants persécutés en Europe. Cependant\, des conflits avec les Portugais conduisirent à sa chute en 1567. Bien que de courte durée\, La France Antarctique reste un chapitre fascinant de l’histoire des explorations européennes dans le Nouveau Monde.
