His impact on the city was huge.  \nDAVID NICKLE will speak on the impact of Mel Lastman on North York and on the megacity of Toronto after amalgamation in 1998. \nHe was a long-time political journalist\, covering Toronto City Politics out of Toronto Community News’ City Hall Bureau. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the South Grey Museum invite you to the Speakers Series 2022\, developed and hosted by Barry Penhale. As someone with an interest in the Museum and its programs\, you know how much we have all missed many activities during the COVID-19 pandemic\, including our series of talks. We decided to welcome our supporters back to a virtual series for 2022\, offered as webinars via Zoom with another eight programs\, occurring as usual on the third Wednesday of each month\, April to November\, at 7:00 pm. \nThe Museum being no longer available as a host site\, and with the continuing threat of COVID\, going virtual was the obvious solution. Moving to a virtual delivery brings with it some additional costs\, so we have made this a subscription series\, but we’ve kept the usual at-the-door cost as a household fee of $10 per session. We are grateful to the Municipality of Grey Highlands for continuing their support for the presenters. \n\nA closeup perspective of the magnificent and largest creatures on this planet. Discover the secret lives of Humpback\, Fin\, and the biggest of them all\, the Blue Whale. Meet the researcher\, Franco Mariotti\, of Whitefish\, Ontario\, who has devoted his life to studying them and learn how these magnificent animals are “fairing” in today’s waters. During his 33 years at the site\, he developed content for exhibits\, public programs\, staff training\, and also helped develop major “natural history themed” travelling exhibits that travelled all over North America. DESCRIPTION:Join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society as we host a concert featuring works by Jewish composers impacted by the Holocaust.  These concerts are being arranged by Michelle Zapf-Belanger\, Section Violin\, Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. \nThere are 3 dates available to attend this concert 10\, 11\, & 12 May.  Make sure you buy tickets for the date that works for your schedule. \nThese concerts are being presented in support of the traveling exhibit  “And in 1948\, I came to Canada”: The Holocaust in Six Dates  on display at the Thunder Bay Museum from April 6th until July 24th\, 2022. \nFeaturing music composed or arranged by – \nErich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957)  \n\nString Quartet No. 2\, Op. 26 (1933)\nOf these musicians featured in this concert\, only Erich Korngold escaped the Nazi death camps. A prominent Austrian composer\, he won an Oscar for a film score in 1937\, and was asked to move temporarily to Los Angeles\, California to compose the score for the new Robin Hood movie starring Errol Flynn. The move saved his life. Only a month later\, the Nazis annexed Austria\, confiscating his home in Vienna.\n\nErwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) \n\nString Quartet No. 1 (1925)\nCzech composer Erwin Schulhoff was a protégé of Antonín Dvořák and Claude Debussy\, among others\, and was enjoying a skyrocketing composing career in the 1920s when his Jewish faith and progressive politics began to create obstacles for him. He was arrested and deported to Wülzburg prison camp near Weißenburg\, Bavaria \, where he died in 1942 from tuberculosis.\n\nAlma Rosé (1906-1944) / Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) \n\nIn mir klingt ein Lied (A song rings out within me)\nAlma Rosé\, an accomplished violinist and member of prominent musical Rosé family\, became the conductor of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz\, a group of the orchestral players in the women’s camp\, who were forced to perform weekly concerts for the SS. She had them perform In mir klingt ein Lied as an act of resistance.\n\nViktor Ullmann (1898-1944) \n\nString Quartet No. 3 (1943)\nViktor Ullmann was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia in 1942 and\, in the two years he was imprisoned there\, composed over 20 works\, including an opera. How much of your efforts in heritage conservation are now related to climate action – or reconciliation\, diversity\, and inclusion – or economic vitality? \nIn parallel\, a national public opinion poll is gathering opinions about heritage conservation from the general public to get insights into why those outside the sector care about preserving heritage buildings\, sites and landscapes in Canada – and how they view our collective efforts. \nThis gathering is an opportunity to explore the issues behind the surveys – part of the Heritage Reset project prompted by dialogue around the goals of the heritage conservation field in a time of rapid societal change. The Heritage Reset is an important national initiative led by the Trust and a dozen partner organizations across the country\, and partially funded by the government of Canada.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society as we host a concert featuring works by Jewish composers impacted by the Holocaust.  These concerts are being arranged by Michelle Zapf-Belanger\, Section Violin\, Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. \nThere are 3 dates available to attend this concert 10\, 11\, & 12 May.  Make sure you buy tickets for the date that works for your schedule. \nThese concerts are being presented in support of the traveling exhibit  “And in 1948\, I came to Canada”: The Holocaust in Six Dates  on display at the Thunder Bay Museum from April 6th until July 24th\, 2022. \nFeaturing music composed or arranged by – \nErich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957)  \n\nString Quartet No. 2\, Op. 26 (1933)\nOf these musicians featured in this concert\, only Erich Korngold escaped the Nazi death camps. A prominent Austrian composer\, he won an Oscar for a film score in 1937\, and was asked to move temporarily to Los Angeles\, California to compose the score for the new Robin Hood movie starring Errol Flynn. The move saved his life. Only a month later\, the Nazis annexed Austria\, confiscating his home in Vienna.\n\nErwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) \n\nString Quartet No. 1 (1925)\nCzech composer Erwin Schulhoff was a protégé of Antonín Dvořák and Claude Debussy\, among others\, and was enjoying a skyrocketing composing career in the 1920s when his Jewish faith and progressive politics began to create obstacles for him. He was arrested and deported to Wülzburg prison camp near Weißenburg\, Bavaria \, where he died in 1942 from tuberculosis.\n\nAlma Rosé (1906-1944) / Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) \n\nIn mir klingt ein Lied (A song rings out within me)\nAlma Rosé\, an accomplished violinist and member of prominent musical Rosé family\, became the conductor of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz\, a group of the orchestral players in the women’s camp\, who were forced to perform weekly concerts for the SS. She had them perform In mir klingt ein Lied as an act of resistance.\n\nViktor Ullmann (1898-1944) \n\nString Quartet No. 3 (1943)\nViktor Ullmann was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia in 1942 and\, in the two years he was imprisoned there\, composed over 20 works\, including an opera. DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 9th for our annual AGM\, with our special guest\, Dr. Carl Benn. \nAbout this event\nThe Town of York Historical Society will hold its 39th Annual General Meeting on Monday\, May 9 online via Zoom. Following the business meeting\, there will be a special presentation by Dr. Carl Benn\, who will speak on Mohawk Chief John Norton and the Indigenous Great Lakes\, 1780s-1820s. \n\nDr. Carl Benn joined X University in 2008 as both a faculty member and Chair of the Department of History. Before then\, he worked in the museum field for several decades\, where he fulfilled senior curatorial and managerial duties\, restored historical properties\, curated exhibits and period-room settings\, and produced educational and other public services. He oversaw the department’s operations from 2008 to 2013\, with the highlight being the introduction of a new degree in History as well as a History Minor. Since completing his five-year term as chair\, he has been able to devote more time to teaching and research. \nHis courses focus on museum history\, curatorship\, heritage management\, material culture\, and archaeology. He was the recipient of the Dean’s Teaching Award in 2012 and is a member of the graduate faculty. \nDr. Benn’s extensive publications include six history books. His most recent is A Mohawk Memoir from the War of 1812: John Norton – Teyoninhokarawen (2019). In 2020\, it won the Canadian Historical Association’s Clio Prize for the best book on the history of Ontario. \n\nHow to attend:\nThis is a virtual event that will take place via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:“The Bachelorette New France (Les Filles a Marier and Les Filles du Roi) : Stories of Bigamy\, Incest\, Witchcraft and Murder” — Presentation by Dawn Kelly & Carol Ufford \nIn 1630 New France was populated mainly by men. With threats to its economy from the British in the south\, plans were made to encourage young women to immigrate\, marry and populate the young colony. \nBetween 1634 and 1663 the Company of 100 Associates sponsored 260 young women who are now known as Les Filles à Marier or The Marriageable Girls. In 1663 the French king took over governing the colony. Louis XIV established a program to bring young female immigrants to New France. These 768 women are now known as Les Filles du Roi or The King’s Daughters. \nContrary to popular belief\, these women were not prostitutes. Many were orphans or from poor families. These young women were able to choose their husbands\, and because men far outnumbered them\, they had plenty of choice. They led fascinating lives in the wilderness of New France and left behind stories of bigamy\, incest\, witchcraft and murder! \nDawn Kelly is a veteran radio newscaster. In 1998\, after 13-years moving town-to-town\, up-and-down the dial in private radio\, she signed on as a national newscaster at The Canadian Press. Dawn has won multiple national awards for her broadcasts as well as a Finalist Award from the New York Festival for Outstanding Achievement. She started searching for her Irish ancestors many years ago only to discover she has deep French-Canadian and Acadian roots. \nCarol Ufford is a retired librarian\, and has been researching her family history off and on for over 30 years. Since retiring in 2016\, she has been able to devote more time to her hobby and has made great progress on her family history story. Her family has deep roots in Ontario\, but she is jealous of her husband’s deep French Canadian roots on his father’s side\, which include 35 Filles à Marier and 34 Filles du Roi. Carol is currently Chair of the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society. \nIn 2021 Carol and Dawn won the Members’ Choice Award from the Toronto Branch of Ontario Ancestors for their presentations on New France.

Each of these artists will speak about their experiences working on this project\, identifying sites\, exploring digital mediums and telling stories of significance from an Indigenous perspective. \nThis event will be held in person at the Storefront Gallery at Arts Etobicoke\, as well as livestreamed online. The OAAS provides support\, training\, and resources for our member agricultural societies to assist them in supporting and deliver agriculture education\, food awareness\, heritage\, tourism\, and cultural programs and experience s in their communities.

DESCRIPTION:WALKING TOUR\n\nWe Are All Treaty People\n\nThe Indigenous peoples of this area view the treaty relationship as one between nations but also between human beings and all other beings inhabiting the land\, water and air we share. Our Indigenous history walk will link stories about the Huron-Wendat\, Seneca\, and the Mississaugas to places and people along Black Creek. By learning this history of where we live\, we will deepen our understanding of how we should live to protect our home and each other. We will visit a Four Directions garden\, Skennen’kó:wa Gamig house on YorkU campus\, and the area where a Huron-Wendat village of longhouses existed in the 1400s\, surrounded by corn fields. We’ll use the “Moccasin Identifier” to help show the connection to the land of each major Indigenous group linked to Toronto\, and ask each other about the footprint we want to leave. \nMeeting point: South-East corner of Jane and Steeles W.\nTour ends at Driftwood Park.\n2-5pm
