Hear the jingle of sleigh bells as you tour the village by horse-drawn wagon ride\, and see stars shining brightly in the country night sky. Throughout the village\, enjoy the familiar scent of hearth fires\, pine and cedar garlands and freshly-made natural centerpieces. \nExperience a pioneer’s first Christmas in the wilderness at the Fife Cabin and hear the crackle of chestnuts roasting over an open fire. Witness the merriment of friends who have gathered for the holidays and join in on a traditional toast to the holiday season at the Fitzpatrick House. Learn about traditional holiday treats while you sample some Turkish Delight in the Milburn House\, and\ndiscover the history of the Christmas tree and stockings. \nView a selection of early Christmas gift ideas at the General Store\, and learn the history of the toy maker at the Carpenter Shop. Listen to Christmas hymns played on the pump organ at the Glen Alda Church and join in on a carol sing. Discover the history behind the traditional Christmas tale T’was the Night Before Christmas in the Print Shop. Do you know the story of the Flying Canoe? Hear the tale\, and enjoy shanties and Christmas songs performed by Glen Caradus and Fiddling Jay. Sample some sugar plums as you listen to the story of how the Nutcracker defeated the Mouse King at the Cider Mill. Have some fun participating in the reindeer games like tandem ski\, snowshoe\, and sled races. Be sure to visit with Father and Mother Christmas themselves. Don’t forget to bring your letter for Father Christmas to leave in his mailbox. On Saturday\, see performances by the Peterborough Scottish Country Dancers\, and on Sunday\, enjoy performances by the Hollow Woods Recorder Consort. \nTempt your taste buds with delicious treats and hot drinks to warm your insides at the Cheese Factory. If you need sustenance\, stop by the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building where we will be serving ham and savory on a bun. \nThere are a variety of items to be won in the Christmas raffle\, and if you are looking for some unique tree ornaments and gifts\, be sure to peruse the selection available in the Museum Shop. \nOn Sunday at 7:00 pm\, witness a live nativity complete with animals and a choir presented by the Keene United Church. In the giving spirit of the season\, on both evenings\, please bring one or more non-perishable food item(s) to donate to the Otonabee- South Monaghan Food Cupboard (drop off in the Museum Shop). \nExperience the warmth and merriment of Christmases past with Christmas by Candlelight\, Saturday & Sunday\, December 7 & 8 from 4 pm to 8 pm each night at Lang Pioneer Village Museum! Admission is $15 for adults\, $10 for students and seniors (60+)\, $7 for youths (ages 5-14)\, free for children under 5. Barker\, un pilote qui reçut la Croix de Victoria. SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Meeting "Grenadier Pond"
DESCRIPTION:Please mark your calendars for the next meeting of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled for 7:30 pm\, Wednesday evening\, November the 6th\, 2024.  We hope you can join us\, either in-person or on-line. \nOur speaker for November will be Ken Stark\, discussing both the natural and human history surrounding the Grenadier Pond. \nThe presentation will cover the Pond’s geological formation and the evolution of human activity ever since.  Once primarily a source of food\, it now provides visitors an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities\, including many recreational pursuits.  As the jewel of High Park\, Grenadier Pond supports a variety of flora and fauna\, some of which are unique to the region.  As with any body of water\, there is an element of risk to its users.  A summary of the unfortunate accidents and tragedies of the last 100+years will be discussed.  Also to be shared are a few interesting stories from the past involving Grenadier Pond as a central character. \nKen is a long-time Swansea resident who lives close to Grenadier Pond.  He regularly visits the pond\, enjoying its beauty and as a place of respite in the middle of the city.  From childhood memories as a visitor to Toronto in the 1960’s through the present\, Ken has participated in various activities on and around the Pond.  At the October Annual General Meeting\, he was elected Vice-President of the Swansea Historical Society. \nThe November meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format so that participants can attend in-person at the Town Hall (95 Lavinia Avenue) or connect on-line using the Zoom tool.

SUMMARY:51th Annual Symposium of the Ontario Archaeological Society
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to attend the 51st Annual Symposium of the Ontario Archaeological Society (OAS) from October 25 to 27\, 2024! It is being hosted by the Thunder Bay Chapter of the OAS in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology\, Lakehead University and OAS Board of Directors. The conference will take place on the boreal forest Traditional Lands of the Ojibway of Fort William First Nation\, signatory to the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850\, and the Homelands of the Métis Nation of Ontario and Red Sky Métis Independent Nation. Most events will be held at the Valhalla Hotel & Conference Centre\, which has great views of Anemki-Wajiw (Thunder Mountain or Mount McKay\, sacred to Fort William First Nation and a Thunder Bay landmark). The Friday night reception will take place at the Thunder Bay Museum and Sunday afternoon there will be field trips to Fort William Historical Park and Early period (PalaeoIndigenous) archaeological sites.

SUMMARY:Kensington Market Historical Society - "Pivotal Art Movements of Kensington Market: CEAC and ChromaZone"
DESCRIPTION:Kensington Market Historical Society and Koffler Arts are proud to co-present talks by distinguished artists Bruce Eves and Andy Fabo. \nEves was an integral member of CEAC\, the Centre for Experimental Art and Communication (1976-1978)\, which had its roots in the Kensington Art Association (1973-1978). Fabo was one of six emerging Canadian artists who created and exhibited in Toronto as ChromaZone/ Chromatique Collective (1981-1985)\, also situated in Kensington Market. Both speakers will discuss their personal involvement in CEAC and ChromaZone\, and will highlight the significant and lasting contributions of these artist-run collectives in Toronto’s contemporary art scene. \nThis talk is presented in honour of National Coming Out Day (Friday\, October 11\, 2024) as both artists have been producing unabashedly gay-themed art from their earliest days.

DESCRIPTION:Conférencière : Danièle Caloz\, fondatrice et membre de la SHT \nJusqu’à la fin du 19e siècle\, l’état de langueur nostalgique était pris très au sérieux par les médecins. Ainsi\, exilée à Francfort\, émaciée et sujette au somnambulisme\, la petite Heidi du récit de Johanna Spyri (1880) est immédiatement renvoyée à ses chères montagnes. \nCette mélancolie\, ce ‘’mal du pays’’ accompagné de symptômes débilitants a reçu ses lettres de noblesse en 1688 du Dr Johannes Hofer. Et puis\, progressivement\, la nostalgie est devenue un signe de pauvreté d’esprit et d’inadaptation sociale ou économique. Il faut s’intégrer. \nAu 20e siècle\, les migrations planétaires engendrées par les crises\, les révolutions et les guerres ont suscité chez les expatriés et les immigrants bien des occasions de pleurer le pays natal. Pourtant la nostalgie continuait à être mal perçue ; il fallait souffrir en silence. \nQu’en est-il au Canada d’aujourd’hui où les multiples réseaux sociaux favorisent les liens ? \nLa nostalgie d’hier existe-t-elle encore ? SUMMARY:Lang Pioneer Village Museum Applefest
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a fun-filled celebration of apples and the harvest season with Applefest at Lang Pioneer Village Museum! The Museum’s sweetest and most popular event returns to the historic village on Sunday\, October 6 from 10 am to 4 pm. Tour the village by horse-drawn wagon and enjoy the sights\, tastes and aromas of autumn and apples. Throughout the village\, view a wide variety of historic demonstrations including cider pressing at the Cider Mill\, threshing\, mattress repair and stuffing\, natural dyeing\, chair caning\, broom making\, log hand-hewing\, sheep shearing\, wood turning by the Peterborough Artisan Centre Wood Turners\, spinning by Shepherd Hill Farms\, rug hooking by the Northumberland Rug Hookers Guild\, and more. View an antique clock and timepiece display brought by the Quinte Timekeepers\, and visit the Ayotte Cabin where historic reenactors\, the 41st Battalion of Brockville Rifles\, 1st Company\, will be performing drills and demonstrating military\nmarching. \nEnjoy traditional music performed by Al Kirby\, and hear the tale of “1862”\, a crankie theatre performed by Glen Caradus. Take a moment to relax and listen to the harvest hymns in the Glen Alda Church. Play a game of apple tic-tac-toe on the Village Green\, participate in some traditional schoolyard games\, and make an apple craft to take home with you. Don’t forget to visit with the lambs! \nIf you are feeling hungry\, visit the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building which will be selling chili and buns to warm you from the inside out as you enjoy the fall weather in our outdoor courtyard. While in the Courtyard\, enjoy harvest dances performed by the Peterborough Scottish Country Dancers. Pick up some traditional fall fair fare from Ben’s Kettle Corn which will be onsite selling kettle corn and candy floss. Enjoy hot or cold apple cider and freshly baked apple treats at the PCAHB and Cheese Factory. There will be bushels of sweet\, juicy apples\, apple pies\,\nand fresh apple cider for sale to take home with you\, as well as fresh Empire Cheese curd and bread. Think you can eat an apple pie the fastest? Participate in our apple pie-eating contest at 2 pm on the Village Green! \nImmerse yourself in the colourful beauty of fall in the historic village and celebrate all things apple with Applefest\, Sunday\, October 6 from 10 am to 4 pm at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. Admission is $15 for adults\, $10 for students and seniors (60+)\, $7 for youths (ages 5-14)\, and free for children under 5. Family admission is also available for $40 and includes 2 adults and up to 4 youths (ages 5-14). Tickets are available at the door and in advance online.
