SUMMARY:Guelph Historical Society Evenings with History: Darin Wybenga\, Knowledge Keeper\, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation
DESCRIPTION:When Mississaugas of the Credit ancestors arrived in southern Ontario in the late 17th century\, they found themselves stewards of approximately 4 million acres of land at the western end of Lake Ontario. The erosion of their land base\, a declining population\, and the continual encroachment of settlers threatened the very existence of the people\, yet the Mississaugas of the Credit remain on their lands today and are proud of their resilience. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the history of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and treaties relevant to the Guelph area. \nIn recent years\, Mr. Wybenga has worked for the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation as the Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Coordinator for the Mississaugas of the Credit’s Dept. of Consultation and Accommodation. His work in the department primarily consists of educating project proponents about the history of the treaty lands\, territory\, and people of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. \nDoors open at 7:00 p.m. and the lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:“The Price Of Loyalty” — Presentation by Gail Copeland \nI am pleased to be able to share my writing journey with you. My fourth great-grandfather was a United Empire Loyalist who left New Jersey at the age of fifteen\, along with his older brother\, to find land in what is now Thorold\, Ontario. I’d like to tell you about the real-life people whose story inspired me to delve deeper. I am an avid genealogist and when I couldn’t find enough facts about what happened to these two boys\, I set out to write about what might have been. I spent a couple of years researching and when I could finally visualize everything in my mind\, I was ready. Please join me in learning about how it started\, who my characters are in real life\, why they had to leave the only home they’d ever known\, the hardships many of our ancestors would have endured just getting to the British Colonies and the difficulties they found once they arrived. I’ll also talk about my self-publishing journey and how it ultimately got me to this point. Finally\, I’ll let you know about the sequel I’m working on which continues during the War of 1812. I’d highly recommend reading the Price of Loyalty before the presentation so I won’t be giving anything away should you decide to read it later! The eBook and soft cover books are available through Amazon.ca. \nGail Copeland was born and raised in Ontario. She graduated from Ryerson University with an English Major. While not a huge fan of history in school. As an adult she found a passion for uncovering her family roots. Her 4th great-grandfather was a United Empire Loyalist. He left New Jersey\, at the age of fifteen\, to tramp through the wilderness in search of A new home is what is n ow known as Thorold\, Ontario. This could be his story and will appeal to anyone wanting to know more about life in the late 1700’s. Having two sons of her own\, Gail found it hard to imagine any mother being forced to send her teenaged boys into the forest alone and not see them for two years.

DESCRIPTION:Come on down to the Thunder Bay Museum on October 8th\, 7:00pm\, and listen to the fur trade\, a presentation by Dr. Daniel R. Laxer.  His book will be available for purchase for $35.00.  This will be a in-person event that is free to view.  The presentation will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in-person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date. \nSpeaker Bio: \nDr. Daniel R. Laxer graduated with his B.A. in History and Music from the University of Alberta and went on to study histories of music and sound in the fur trade for his M.A. at York University and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. DESCRIPTION:A celebration of excellence in heritage conservation\, honouring outstanding preservation leaders\, projects\, and initiatives across Ontario \nThe Venue and Event: The Assembly Hall has been an important part of the Etobicoke Lakeshore community for over a century. Built in 1898 as part of the Mimico Lunatic Asylum (later renamed the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital)\, it was designed to serve as a place of recreation and worship for the patients and hospital staff. After the hospital’s closure in 1979\, Assembly Hall fell into disuse for two decades. The combined efforts of local activists and politicians helped to support the City of Toronto’s restoration of this facility\, which reopened on in June 2001. Join us for a beautifully catered cocktail party and formal awards presentation in this gorgeous designated historic building.

DESCRIPTION:The faithful old sign at the four corners has seen better days. \nWhen Fred Moyer and his friends placed their sign at the four corners it was during Canada’s Centennial year of 1967. The population of Port Maitland was 112 inhabitants. The home computer was not even a possibility. Facts that are available on the web today were not available then. Fred did a great job of giving our little hamlet a sense of history and pride in our community. \nToday with the advantage of computers we have learned a bit more then Fred could have known. \nThe Port Maitland\, “On the Grand” Historical Association wishes to celebrate Fred’s efforts by replacing his sign and updating the essential information. \nCome out to the four corners on Saturday October 15th @ 12:00 noon; and join us for the unveiling of the new sign. \nPlease leave your car at home or park it at least several hundred feet from the corner. DESCRIPTION:Port Maitland\, “On the Grand” Historical Association will hold its next membership meeting in the Disher Room of Dunnville Library on October 17 at 7:00 p.m. \nThe guest speaker will be Jacqueline Fisher – Professional Archaeologist\, BA\, MA. \nJacquie has been running her own company (FAC) for the last 25 years\, and has worked in the Dunnville area as well as Eastern and Southwestern Ontario. Her team has worked for the City of Windsor and for municipalities and individuals throughout Ontario. \nJacquie is the Vice-President of the Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Archeological Society\, which is hosting the annual OAS symposium this October 28 – 30th held at Royal Botanical Gardens and McMaster Innovation Park. \nJacquie will provide a PowerPoint presentation on some of the aspects of conducting commercial archaeology in the province and the types of sites that she has worked on through the years. \nThis from CTV Windsor (September 2013):\n“An archaeological dig in Lakeshore wrapped up Monday\, while construction on the Puce River (Tecumseh ON) bridge expansion along County Road 22 carries on.\nUp to 100\,000 objects were uncovered during the dig\, giving a glimpse back into Essex County history.\nJackie Fisher\, lead archaeologist\, says now that the digging and dusting are complete\, the project moves into the next phase.\n‘The actual detective puzzle figuring out is just beginning\,’ says Fisher. … It unveiled various items\, including pottery\, arrowheads\, wild bore [sic]tusks and axe pieces. Some things from other regions were found\, including the Caribbean.” \nThis leads to many questions.  For instance does Jackie have any explanation how items from the Caribbean ended up on the shore of Lake St. Clair?  Are these types of discoveries very common?
