SUMMARY:Nine Ships 1825 – Peter Robinson Irish Emigration Bicentennial Presentation
DESCRIPTION:A presentation about the Nine Ships 1825 – Peter Robinson Irish Emigration Bicentennial will take place at the Lakefield Historical Society meeting on Thursday\, September 26 th at 7:30pm at the Lakefield Legion. The public is welcome to attend. \nThe Peter Robinson Emigration of 1825 was a landmark initiative that brought nearly 2\,000 Irish settlers to Canada\, laying the foundation for what would become Nogojiwanong-Peterborough. This rare government experiment aimed to test the viability of British emigration policy by covering all expenses for settlers for 18 months. Each family’s journey and experiences have been meticulously documented\, providing a rich archival resource. \nTo mark the Bicentennial\, the not-for-profit organization called Nine Ships 1825 Inc. has been formed to honour this chapter in Canadian history. Named after the nine ships that carried the Irish emigrants across the Atlantic in 1825\, these ships were named: the Fortitude\, John Barry\, Resolution\, Regulus\, Albion\, Star\, Elizabeth\, Amity\, and the Brunswick. They embarked from Cobh\, County Cork\, and set sail towards what was then Lower and Upper Canada. \n“The name Nine Ships 1825 serves as a tribute to the courage and resilience of these emigrants. It reflects the arduous journey they undertook and the significant impact their settlement had on the development of our local communities. We honour the legacy of those who braved the unknown to build a new life in Canada\, and we commemorate the foundational role these settlers played in shaping the identity and history of Nogojiwanong-Peterborough and the surrounding areas.” states Board Chair Brendan Moher. \nArchivist and historian Elwood Jones and cultural resource manager and historian Dennis Carter- Edwards will speak to the significance of this emigration\, outline the journey and highlight the resources available to learn more. Past President of the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club Maureen Crowley and former Mayor of the Township of Selwyn Mary Smith\, will outline previous commemorations of this emigration\, describe how Nine Ships 1825 was formed and what events all the community partners and heritage/historical groups are planning to have during 2025\,\nincluding special Bicentennial events during August 1-10\, 2025. \n“The new website www.nineships1825.com is designed to share information about the Bicentennial project and everyone is encouraged to visit the site to learn about the history of this emigration\, it’s significance to the Peterborough area and about the many events planned for 2025.” states Chair Brendan Moher. \nThe history of the Robinson Irish emigrants is intertwined with that of the Indigenous peoples of the region\, particularly the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg (Mississauga) First Nations on whose territory the Robinson emigrants settled. The Bicentenary of the Robinson emigration invites reflection on these complex histories\, honouring the resilience of early settlers and advancing reconciliation efforts within our community. \nFor more information please contact:\nNine Ships 1825 Inc. Director on the Board and Secretary\nMaureen Crowley – Email: nineships1825@gmail.com Tel. 705 939-6135

Geography brought us together\, but history has connected us. \nRepresented will be a National Historic Site\, you’ll be able to search archived online newspapers\, see the Icelandic Story told\, sample settler stories and adventures\, hear about Immigrant tribulations\, see salvaged log ends\, land records and photos you’ve never seen before. See insights of the documentary about our ‘Movie Man’\, Keith Stata. Yes\, there will be trains and whistles. \nSo\, bring your curiosity and questions and you may make some connections of your own. Your family will thank you. \nTo quote our friends at Bark Lake Cultural Development: “The questions are endless\, and the answers are fascinating.” \nAugust 30\, 31\, September 1 at Kinmount Fair Heritage Complex 10 am to 6 pm (5pm on Sunday)

From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday\, August 25\, we’re hosting a visit that includes hands-on cooking in a historic kitchen and a tour of a breathtaking kitchen garden. \nDundurn Castle is a 40-room villa built in the 1830s as a home for the family of railway magnate\, lawyer and Premier of the United Canadas Sir Allan Napier MacNab. (Fun fact: holders of a seniors’ Presto pass can travel door-to-door between Toronto and Hamilton for just $6.06 each way!) \nAssisted by Dundurn’s Cook Demonstrators\, participants will work together to prepare a traditional recipe in the historic kitchen. Recipes will be seasonal options that can come from the garden; some common recipes have been salads\, tarts\, turnovers\, fritters\, and rissoles. Everyone will receive a recipe booklet to keep that they will use to follow and cook from. \nFollowing the workshop and after a short break\, participants will explore the lovingly restored Historic Kitchen Garden (pictured below)\,where costumed staff grow over 200 heirloom varieties of fruits\, vegetables\, herbs\, and flowers for use in the historic kitchen. \nVisitors will also have the opportunity to explore with costumed staff over 40 rooms and discover the history of the MacNab family and the servants who lived and worked below stairs. \nAdmission: $89.27 (general). $76.07 (Culinary Tourism Alliance members). $68.57 (CHC members).
