SUMMARY:Caledon Public Library: Celebrating Black History Month with Captain Kevin Junor
DESCRIPTION:Caledon Public Library is proud to host Captain Kevin Junor as he leads a presentation followed by a Q&A session about the No 2 Construction Battalion in World War 1. \nOn 5 July 1916\, the Department of Defence and Militia authorized the formation of No. 2 Construction Battalion. It was the largest Black unit in Canadian history. Its members continued the proud tradition of service to king and country that went back to the American Revolution and continued through the War of 1812 and the Rebellions of 1837–38 to the start of the First World War. \nCaptain Kevin Junor (retired) has a career with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Reserves that spans over three decades. He enrolled as a private and progressed through the ranks to be a chief warrant officer\, the most senior non-commissioned rank and was appointed the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM). He is a commissioned officer and was deployed on two operational tours of duties to Sierra Leone and Jordan. Kevin is a retired Deputy Superintendent from the Ministry of the Solicitor General. He is active in the community and has chaired and served on a number of boards\, including the Policing Advisory Council of Caledon. His awards include the Order of Military Merit and the Harry Jerome Professional Excellence Award. \nRegistration is required. Métro St. Clair. \nArrivée: retour à grille de la rue Yonge \nMarquons ensemble à notre façon l’Armistice du 11 novembre. En parcourant les allées du cimetière nous présenterons les tombes et cénotaphes à la mémoire des soldats canadiens qui ont combattu dans les guerres ici et outremer. Nous verrons aussi des monuments en l’honneur de divers régiments canadiens ainsi que des plaques historiques\, telle celle en l’honneur de William G. Barker\, un pilote qui reçut la Croix de Victoria. SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Meeting "Grenadier Pond"
DESCRIPTION:Please mark your calendars for the next meeting of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled for 7:30 pm\, Wednesday evening\, November the 6th\, 2024.  We hope you can join us\, either in-person or on-line. \nOur speaker for November will be Ken Stark\, discussing both the natural and human history surrounding the Grenadier Pond. \nThe presentation will cover the Pond’s geological formation and the evolution of human activity ever since.  Once primarily a source of food\, it now provides visitors an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities\, including many recreational pursuits.  As the jewel of High Park\, Grenadier Pond supports a variety of flora and fauna\, some of which are unique to the region.  As with any body of water\, there is an element of risk to its users.  A summary of the unfortunate accidents and tragedies of the last 100+years will be discussed.  Also to be shared are a few interesting stories from the past involving Grenadier Pond as a central character. \nKen is a long-time Swansea resident who lives close to Grenadier Pond.  He regularly visits the pond\, enjoying its beauty and as a place of respite in the middle of the city.  From childhood memories as a visitor to Toronto in the 1960’s through the present\, Ken has participated in various activities on and around the Pond.  At the October Annual General Meeting\, he was elected Vice-President of the Swansea Historical Society. \nThe November meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format so that participants can attend in-person at the Town Hall (95 Lavinia Avenue) or connect on-line using the Zoom tool.
