What We Do

Preserving, promoting, and protecting
Founded in 1888, The Ontario Historical Society is a non-profit corporation and registered charity; a non-government group bringing together people of all ages, all walks of life and all cultural backgrounds interested in preserving some aspect of Ontario’s history. The OHS has a provincial mandate, but its headquarters is located at the historic John McKenzie House (built 1913) in Willowdale, Ontario. John McKenzie House, and its adjacent stables and milk-house are all designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. The OHS is governed by an all-volunteer board of directors, and is supported by and supports its vast network of member individuals, organizations and institutions, including the OHS’s 350+ affiliated societies.

OHS was deeply saddened to learn of Julia Munro’s passing. Julia was a true heritage champion for Ontario and the longest serving female MPP in our province’s history. Julia was a person of the highest integrity and marvellous insights and she will be greatly missed.

Thrilled that we are recognizing such a deserving initiative; decades of hard work manifested into an incredible education tool. Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall highlights the importance of Indigenous communities telling their own stories to educate Canadians about our collective past.

Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada (2000-2017) delivering the keynote address this afternoon at the 131st OHS AGM.

Honoured to have Justice McLachlin speaking today about the Historical importance of the Supreme Court. #canadianhistory

Pleased to be joining OHS affiliate member Friends of Hope Mill today for a demonstration of this incredible water-powered sawmill!
